The much-discussed Alex Goligoski for James Neal deal might not be far off.

According to TSN Insider Darren Dreger of the Dreger Report, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars “may be working on a deal involving two high quality players.”

Those players, according to Dreger, are in fact the centerpiece of discussions.

“It’s believed the Pens are willing to move defenceman Alex Goligoski for the right forward, and a trade involving Stars winger James Neal has been discussed.

“Not saying it’s going to happen, but considering what went down in the wee hours Saturday morning between the Blues and Avs, it’s most certainly possible.”

The trade Dreger refers to between the Blues and Avalanche sent “Erik Johnson, along with forward Jay McClement and a conditional first-round pick to Colorado for highly touted defenceman, Kevin Shattenkirk, developing power forward Chris Stewart, and a second-round draft choice.”

More information as it becomes available.

Update: 12:00

From TSN Insider Bob McKenzie’s Twitter

“As @DarrenDreger had in his daily report, lots of chatter about potential PIT-DAL deal that would involve Alex Goligoski and James Neal.”

He added:

“With Letang, Martin and Michalek, Goligoski may be logical bait to get a top-flight offensive winger. Pens could also add Kovalev from OTT.”

Obviously, count Orpik among the Penguins’ top defensemen signed beyond this season. Also, Deryk Engelland and Ben Lovejoy are under contract next season.

Update: 1:36

According to Dave Molinari of PG+, the Penguins and Stars are engaged in a discussions of a four player swap.

“The source said that under the exchange being discussed, the Penguins would acquire a forward and defenseman from the Stars — no names were given, although it was stated explicitly that Brad Richards would not be the forward — and Dallas would get at least one defenseman from the Penguins’ major-league roster, and probably at least one other asset.”

Additionally, Molinari, not known for discussing rumors of any kind, mentions that Alexei Kovalev is in fact very high on GM Ray Shero’s list of potential trade targets.

“...the Penguins do plan to make a serious attempt to acquire right winger Alex Kovalev from Ottawa.”
