If you were wondering how the Pittsburgh Penguins might respond to Sunday’s late-game brawl with and subsequent trash talk from the Philadelphia Flyers, you got your answer yesterday.
In a move that shows the Penguins won’t put up with any crap in this meaningless 82nd game of the season, enforcer and all-around lunatic Steve MacIntyre was recalled from the AHL late yesterday afternoon.
What will a super heavyweight do to prevent a cheapshot on one or several of the Penguins’s stars, you might ask?
Well, MacIntyre is what some call a loose canon, and when circumstances dictate, he doesn’t always seek out the opposition’s heavyweight for a staged fight.
Just watch this video from a March 11 game, while he was with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL.
Sure, MacIntyre doesn’t fight often, with just three fights on the season, all coming at the AHL level — but he does fight when he needs to, and this afternoon could be a “need to” time.
Game 82 is pointless for both the Penguins and Flyers in terms of standings and playoff seeding, and with the two teams set to match up against each other in the first round, a lot of tone setting could be on the menu.
Then again, both teams could find it more important to play it safe and avoid the shady business to prevent potential injuries and/or suspensions heading into Game One.
Either way, there’s no harm in having an insurance policy on the bench should all hell break loose.
