The Penguins surprised everyone today by trading their 7th round selection in 2012 to Washington to the rights for goaltender Tomas Vokoun.

Vokoun, who will turn 37 this July, was signed to a two year deal worth two million dollars per year.

The move solidifies the backup goaltender position for the Penguins and should take the burden of 65+ games off of Marc-Andre Fleury’s plate. I think a 52/30 split would be pertinent between the two of them.

It says a lot about Vokoun, who could have certainly garnered a starting spot in free-agency, and perhaps more money, to sign this deal to come to a competitor in Pittsburgh.

What are your thoughts on the deal, good or bad?
