The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins today announced that goaltender Adam Berkhoel has re-signed for another season.

Berkhoel recorded a 15-11-2 record in 28 appearances with the Baby Penguins last season, serving primarily as a backup to prospect John Curry.

His newly-signed AHL contract puts him in line to serve a similar role in 2009-10, though it is possible his situation could change.

Curry remains unsigned, Brent Johnson is the new favorite to win a backup job in Pittsburgh, and Brad Theissen intends to make noise in training camp.

In other words, Berkhoel could find himself starting in the AHL, serving as a backup in the AHL, or possibly even in the ECHL as a starter.

The Baby Penguins also signed minor league defenseman Mitch Ganzak to an AHL contract.

In 64 games with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL last season, Ganzak scored 40 points and recorded a plus-13 rating.

He is likely to return to Wheeling in 2009-10 and could be used as an AHL call-up in case of injuries.
