A Week of NHL Transactions (2/5 - 2/12)
A quick breakdown of the major transactions that took place over the weekend:
New York Islanders– Jack Hillen and Joe Callahan called up from Bridgeport (AHL)
Analysis – Mark Streit is suffering from a shoulder injury and Thomas Pock was sent to IR so they needed somebody healthy to play defense. Do they Islanders have any luck?? We’ll find out April 10th when the lottery draw will take place. They Penguins may be in the lottery if they do not turn around their play. How crazy would that be to win the lottery from the 10th spot??
New York Rangers– Corey Potter called up from Hartford (AHL)
Analysis – Paul Mara has the flu. Potter shall take the train back to
Hogwarts Hartford when Mara is healthy.
Toronto– Jonas Frogren called up from Toronto (AHL)
Analysis – Brian Burke continues to evaluate talent as his team is all but mathematically eliminated. Expect there to be daily Toronto transactions.
Columbus– Dan LaCosta emergency recall from Syracuse (AHL)
Analysis – LaCosta was needed to back up Dubie because Mason was kissing Phil Kessel or something like that. Once Mason recovers from mono, LaCosta will be demoted.
Dallas– Tobias Stephan sent to Bridgeport (AHL), Brent Krahn called up from Chicago (AHL)
Analysis – G Stephan hasn’t played a game since Jan. 8 since Marty Turco has played every game since mid December. Stephan needs to stay sharp so he will play a couple games to stay in game shape. Tis the life of a backup.
Edmonton– Jean-Francois Jacques and Ryan Potulny sent to Springfield (AHL), Theo Peckham called up from Springfield (AHL)
Analysis – Jacques has not played an NHL game since Jan. 08 due to a herniated disk in his back. Lubomir Visnovsky and Tom Gilbert have been injured so Peckham was called up to fill in the lineup.
St. Louis- Manny Legace Waived, Chris Holt called up from Peoria (AHL)
Analysis – 3.18 GAA and .885 save percentage. If your starting goaltender has numbers like that they are unlikely to remain your starting goaltender. He’ll play in the AHL for a while and a team like Washington will take a flier on him at the deadline. Holt will take his place on the NHL roster.
Washington- Karl Alzner called up from Hershey (AHL) Staffan Kronwall claimed off waivers from Toronto
Analysis – Capitals top prospect Alzner has been up and down several times this season. The callups and demotions are apparently getting into his head Kronwall is an interesting player in the fact that he is rather raw but has played well in his first N. American season.
Trade Carolina <–> Tampa Bay- Wade Brookbank, Josef Melichar, 4th round pick traded for Jussi Jokinen
Analysis – Faceoff Factor’s own Michael Farkas covers the trade much better than I could dream of doing.
Dallas- Sean Avery reinstated and placed on waivers
Analysis – Michael Farkas once again dominates the analysis of the move.
Pittsburgh- Alex Goligoski sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL)
Analysis – Goligoski had been relegated to the press box because Ryan Whitney and Phillipe Boucher were playing much better hockey than him. Or Therrien does not feel that the team’s leading scorer from defense is any good. You pick. Playing top line AHL minutes is better than playing top line press box minutes however.
St. Louis- Manny Legace sent to Peoria (AHL)
Analysis – Legace was scheduled to start for the Rivermen on Wednesday and if he can put it together in the minors he may find himself a backup job on a Stanley Cup contender such as Washington or Montreal.
Minnesota- Kurtis Foster sent to Houston (AHL) for conditioning stint
Analysis – Foster played in his first live game since breaking his leg nearly 11 months ago. Video of the unfortunate injury here.
Philadelphia- Lasse Kukkonen Placed on waivers
Analysis – If the Flyers are trying to get rid of defensemen you know he is not very good. This is the case with Kukkonen. He played top 4 minutes last season… How did they make the finals??
St. Louis- Andy McDonald four-year contract extension worth $18.8 million
Analysis – Great move by the Blues locking up a top 6 if not top 3 forward in McDonald. He’s been roughly a point per game player the past 4 years and has blazing speed. He was due to become a UFA and would have earned much more on the open market.
Dallas- Sean Avery sent to Hartford (AHL)
Analysis – Avery was curiously sent to the Rangers minor league affiliate. My guess is if he behaves himself in the AHL he will be claimed by the severely struggling Rangers… if he makes it that far.
Tampa Bay- Josef Melichar called up from Norfolk (AHL)
Analysis – Why?? Rough times if Melichar is expected to actually play in the NHL. The quest for former Penguins continues.
Buffalo- Nathan Gerbe called up from Portland (AHL)
Analysis – My favorite non-Penguin player in the NHL is back. With Vanek out for about a month, they need scoring any way they can get it. Gerbe is tied for the rookie scoring lead in the AHL with 37 points in 32 games. He’s also the coolest player because he’s 5’ 5” 160 lb.
