Candiens Fire Carbonneau, GM Gainey To Fill Void
According to several media sources and now confirmed by the Montreal Canadiens on their web site, general manager Bob Gainey has fired coach Guy Carbonneau.
Gainey will step in for the remainder of the season as head coach, while associate coach Doug Jarvis and assistant coaches Kirk Muller and Roland Melanson will remain in their current roles.
Carbonneau had a 124-83-23 record in Montreal, but his team has been a major disappointment this season, dropping from one of the powerhouses in the Eastern Conference to a team fighting for a playoff spot.
This is the third firing in the last month, as the Pittsburgh penguins fired Michel Therrien and the New York Rangers fired Tom Renney. Like the Canadiens, the Penguins and Rangers underachieved before the coaching change.
The Canadiens take the ice tomorrow night against the Edmonton Oilers.
A press conference is scheduled for 7:00 tonight.
