Tim Panaccio is reporting the Philadelphia Flyers have fired head coach John Stevens after his team got off to an unimpressive 13-11-1 (27 points, 10th place) start.

Rumors have been swirling for a few days that such a move could be on the horizon, but most believed such a move wouldn’t happen until after the new year, at the earliest.

The news is just breaking, and a press conference is scheduled for this evening.

There are no further details at this point.

TSN is reporting former Carolina Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette will take over behind the bench.

“Peter Laviolette brings experience along with a different approach to the game,” said Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. “We look forward to him putting his stamp on the team quickly and getting our team headed in the right direction.”

Laviolette will make his Flyers debut tomorrow night in Philadelphia against the Washington Capitals.

“Obviously this is a great opportunity. I am really excited,” said Laviolette. “The Flyers are an organization that has a lot of tradition and a lot of history. This is just an exciting time for me and my family and we are really looking forward to it.”
