For the sake of preventing the news from being buried below the draft order, we’ll start with a few tidbits…

  • According to Miami Herald blog On Frozen Pond, the Penguins are among two teams looking to move up to the 15th spot in the draft, currently occupied by the Panthers. The Oilers are the other team possibly interested in the draft pick.
  • Penguins GM Ray Shero is expected to meet with Sergei Gonchar’s agent, J.P. Barry, sometime today, according to Pierre Lebrun of ESPN. Lebrun reports that the sticking point appears to be term, as Gonchar wants three years, while the Penguins continue to offer two.
  • Central Scouting, according to NHL.com, ranks right wing Stanislav Galiev as the number 20 North American prospect entering the draft.
  • TSN’s Mock Draft has the Penguins selecting right wing Austin Watson with the 20th overall pick. “You ask, how could the rich get richer? I think the Penguins could do it by taking Watson. He’s a complete player. He can play the boards and score goals. He’ll be key with Malkin, Staal and Crosby.”
  • NHL.com has three mock drafts, all projecting different players to be drafted by the Penguins.

Adam Kimelman says center Nick Bjugstad (ranked 13 among North American skaters by Central Scouting). “It’s easy to picture giant high-school center (6-4, 188) developing into power winger/”

Mike Morreale says center Quinton Howden (ranked 19 among North American skaters by Central Scouting). “Relentless and aggressive on the forecheck while posting 65 points in 65 WHL games.”

Brad Holland says right wing Vladimir Tarasenko (ranked 2 among European skaters by Central Scouting and 4 among all players by the International Scouting Service). “The chance to play with Evgeni Malkin and possibly Sergei Gonchar will be enough to draw Tarasenko over.”
