According to the Islanders’ official NHL page, defenseman Brian Strait has been claimed off waivers.

The Islanders are in need of some defensive depth with Lubomir Visnovsky’s refusal to return to the states from the KHL. Visnovsky was suspended today, though that suspension hardly means much when he’s across the world.

Strait has played in a total of 12 NHL games and was placed on waivers by the Penguins on Thursday following their intrasquad scrimmage on Wednesday.

Strait was principally an American Hockey Leaguer in the Penguins organization, which is oozing with young depth at the position, though that depth has yet to be tested. Defensemen Ben Lovejoy and Robert Bortuzzo figure to see some ice time as a “seventh defenseman” where this move looks like a solid message that the time to crack the lineup is now for youngster Simon Despres.

The NHL required finalized rosters by today.
