Spitfires secure Memorial Cup with 4-1 win
The Windsor Spitfires beat the Kelowna Rockets, 4-1, on Sunday to win their first ever Memorial Cup. They are also the first team to win the tournament after losing their first two games.
Adam Henrique gave Windsor the lead at 3:22 of the first period, and the Spits never looked back. Windsor forward Greg Nemisz stripped the puck from fellow Calgary Flames prospect Mikael Backlund as the Rockets attempted to clear the zone. Nemisz fed Henrique in the slot, and Henrique made no mistake about putting his team ahead.
Dale Mitchell piled on not long after, while defensemen Ryan Ellis and Rob Kwiet scored on big bombs from the point.
Kelowna captain Colin Long scored just seconds into the middle frame, but the Rockets would get nothing more.
Some of us favored the Spitfires to win this before the season even started, and behind stars like Ellis, Nemisz, and Taylor Hall, they didn’t disappoint.
