Interesting Stat Shows The Cost Per Save

While surfing the Internet a few days ago, I came across an interesting statistic that determines a goalie’s value by looking at how much each save he makes costs.

Andre Demers of Puck That Hit came up with this stat and tallied all of the goalies in the NHL.

Basically, what the stat amounts to is the more saves a goalie makes, the bigger bargain he becomes. Conversely, the fewer saves a goalie makes, the bigger albatross he becomes.

Obviously, the goalies who have larger contracts and make more money must perform to a higher level and make more saves in order to justify their contract…at least according to this statistic.

Top 3 Goalies
$520 Jason LaBarbera (Los Angeles Kings)
$594 Timothy Jr. Thomas (Boston Bruins)
$635 Dan Ellis (Nashville Predators)

Bottom 3 Goalies
$4,365 Marty Turco (Dallas Stars)
$4,876 Nikolai Khabibulin (Chicago Blackhawks)
$6,000 Jose Theodore (Colorado Avalanche)

Interestingly, Pittsburgh Penguins goalies Ty Conklin and Dany Sabourin make a showing high up on the list.

Conklin comes in at fourth at just over $641 per save, while Sabourin is ranked fifth at just under $685 per save. Marc-Andre Fleury is ranked 31st, with a cost per save totaling just over $2,073.

Now that’s crazy … interesting on Conklin’s view.

Very interesting. And, to be honest, I’m surprised he’s not number one. He’s making very little money and playing well. Then again, I suppose he hasn’t faced a plethora of shots, which would hurt him when using this stat.

I’m very surprised to see Sabourin where he is.

Conk’s been great. I hope he can keep it up. His worth will improve.
Then, what to do with Sabourin when Fluery comes back?

I’m working on a piece about that as we speak. There are several options, as you will see this afternoon.

Sure am! Haha, actually I thought of it last night when Fleury was interviewed during the game. It’s not going up today, though, as I don’t have as much free time this afternoon, as I thought I might. Tomorrow morning seems more likely.
