Week 5 Power Rankings

Mike Adams | Inside The Numbers

Nov 6, 11:38 AM | Hype this story!

I used five categories (PP, PK, 5-on-5, Regulation record, and Last 10 games record) to determine which teams statistically are the best in the NHL at the current time.

The power play and penalty kill are adjusted for shorthanded goals allowed/scored. I use 5-on-5 because that becomes more important come playoff time. Same for regulation record, as it eliminates the “goofy golf” aspect of 4-on-4 overtime and the shootouts which aren’t part of the playoffs anyway.

Each team is ranked 1-30 in each category, then I add all the ranks together. Those are the numbers you will see below.

Rank Score Team   Rank Score Team
1 17 Ottawa Senators   16 75 St. Louis Blues
2 25 Detroit Red Wings   17 85 Calgary Flames
3 37 Carolina Hurricanes   18 86 Florida Panthers
4 38 Columbus Blue Jackets   19 91 Buffalo Sabres
5 41 Montreal Canadiens   20 91 Toronto Maple Leafs
6 50 Philadelphia Flyers   21 94 Nashville Predators
7 52 New York Islanders   22 95 Chicago Blackhawks
8 54 Colorado Avalanche   23 103 New Jersey Devils
9 55 Minnesota Wild   24 104 Phoenix Coyotes
10 63 Pittsburgh Penguins   25 107 Tampa Bay Lightning
11 66 New York Rangers   26 111 Vancouver Canucks
12 72 San Jose Sharks   27 112 Anaheim Ducks
13 73 Boston Bruins   28 120 Washington Capitals
14 75 Dallas Stars   29 127 Atlanta Thrashers
15 75 Los Angeles Kings   30 131 Edmonton Oilers

Mike, where are the Pens if you toss out 5 on 5? That’s where they have to improve imo to be a playoff threat.
