Below are the updated Special Teams Action Ratings.

How they work: They add the power play and penalty killing percentages, while giving credit for shorthanded goals scored and deducting for shorthanded goals allowed.

Note that the Pittsburgh Penguins, who had hovered near the top early in the season, have tumbled all the way into the middle of the pack now.

Neither the power play nor the penalty killing have been at all effective in the last month or so. The power play has sputtered along at 17.7 percent since the win at Minnesota on October 30.

The penalty kill is even worse, at 72.2 percent since the loss to Philly on November 7.

Needless to say, either both facets improve, or the next thing that will need improvement is their April golf games.
