2008 NHL Draft Preview: Collegiate Selections

It’s that time of year. My colleague Jesse Marshall can give you the lowdown of where every player might end up in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, but for the collegiate fans out there just interested in knowing who might get selected instead of where they might end up, this is the stop for you.

There are two categories for collegiate players. The first includes players that are already on NCAA rosters and have played at least one season. The second category includes players that have committed from other leagues and are scheduled to play their first year of college hockey this year. Some of those players may not join with their colleges until next year.

Without further adieu, the players to watch:

CURRENT NCAA PLAYERS
Colin Wilson – C – Boston University
6’1, 208lb senior scored 12 goals and 23 assists in his final year for the Terriers. He is expected to go somewhere in the middle of the 1st round.

Jack Downing – LW – University of Vermont
6’2, 192lb winger had just 3 goals and 8 assists in his freshman year, but he was solid defensively. He’s expected to go early in the third round.

Cody Coloubef – D – University of Wisconsin
6’0, 195lb defenseman had 4 goals and six assists from the blueline as a freshman. He’s expected to go early in the 3rd round.

Zach Fenwick – D – Mercyhurst College
6’0, 200lb defenseman played just 4 games for the Lakers this past year but offers promise. He’s expected to go late in the 3rd round.

COMMITTED NCAA PLAYERS
Joe Colborne – LW – Denver University
6’3, 188lb winger played for Camrose of the AJHL last year. The 18-year old scored 33 goals and 57 assists and is expected to go in the middle of the 1st round.

Zac Dalpe – RW – Ohio State
6’1, 175lb winger played for Penticton of the BCHL in Canada last year. He scored 27 goals and 36 assists and is expected to go late in the first round.

Jimmy Hayes – RW/C – Boston College
6’4, 210lb forward is part of the US National Team Development program and Lincoln of the USHL. He is expected to go late in the first round.

John Carlson – D – University of Massachusetts
6’2, 210lb defenseman had 12 goals and 31 assists from the blueline for Indiana of the USHL last year, as well as time on the US U-18 team. He is expected to go late in the 1st round.

Jake Gardiner – D – University of Wisconsin
6’1, 175lb defenseman is a high school graduate out of Minnetonka High School in Minnesota. He is expected to go in the first half of the 2nd round.

Aaron Ness – D – University of Minnesota
5’10, 165lb defenseman is a high school graduate out of Roseau High School in Minnesota. He is expected to go in the first half of the 2nd round.

Danny Kristo – RW – University of North Dakota
5’11, 175lb winger was part of the US Development squad. He is expected to go in the second half of the 2nd round.

Corey Trivino – C – Boston University
6’0, 17lb center scored 19 goals and 50 assists, was with Stouffville of the OPJHL in Canada, and is a past member of the Canadian U-18 team and Ontario U-17 team. He is expected to go early in the 3rd round.

Kurtis Bartliff – LW – Colgate University
6’0, 180lb winger scored 36 goals and 26 assists for Listowell of the MWJHL. He’s expected to go early in the 3rd round.

Justin Schultz – D – University of Wisconsin
6’1, 170lb defenseman scored 9 goals and 31 assists for Westside of the BCHL. He is expected to go late in the 3rd round.

Cory Fienhage – D – University of North Dakota
6’2, 190lb defenseman comes out of Eastview High in Minnesota. He’s expected to go late in the 3rd round.

Justin Jokinen – RW – Minnesota State
6’2, 165lb winger comes out of Cloquet High School in Minnesota. He is expected to go late in the 3rd round.

David Toews – C – University of North Dakota
5’11, 170lb center comes out of prestigious Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Minnesota, scoring 2 goals and 7 assists. He is expected to go early in the 4th round.

Derek Stepan – RW – University of Wisconsin
6’0, 168lb winger also comes out of Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Minnesota. He is expected to go early in the 4th round.

Brandon Burlon – D – University of Michigan
6’0, 190lb defenseman scored 7 goals and 17 assists as a member of St. Michaels of the OPJRA in Canada. He is expected to go late in the 4th round.

Max Nicastro – D – Boston University
6’2, 190lb defenseman scored 6 goals and 14 assists for Chicago of the USHL last year. He is expected to go late in the 4th round.

Daulton Leveille – C – Michigan State
6’0, 170lb center scored 29 goals and 27 assists for St. Catherine’s of the GHL last year. He is expected to go early in the 5th round.

Nathan Condon – C – University of Wisconsin
6’1, 185lb center is out of Wausau High School out of Wisconsin. He is expected to go late in the 5th round.

Taylor Stefishan – LW – Ohio State
6’0, 185lb winger scored 33 goals and 48 assists for Langley of the BCHL last year. He is expected to go late in the 6th round.

Brodie Reid – RW – Northeastern University
6’2, 180lb winger scored 52 goals and 37 assists for Burnaby of the BCHL last year. He is expected to go late in the 6th round.

David Warsofsky – D – Boston University
5’8, 160lb defenseman comes from the US National Development team. He is expected to go late in the 6th round.

Jared Festler – C – St. Cloud State
5’9, 165lb forward scored 13 goals and 23 assists for Lincoln of the USHL. He is expected to go late in the 6th round.

David Carle – D – Denver University
5’11, 180lb is from Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Minnesota. He is expected to go in the 7th round.

Justin Florek – W – Northern Michigan
6’4, 195lb forward has been committed to Northern Michigan since 2005 and has been part of the US National Development squad. He is expected to go in the 7th round.

Bryce Aneloski – D – Providence College
6’2, 205lb defenseman scored 9 goals and 17 assists for Cedar Rapids of the USHL. He is expected to go late in the 7th round.

Luke McManus – D – Minnesota-Duluth
6’0, 178lb defenseman is from Rosemount High School in Minnesota. He is expected to go late in the 7th round.

Joe Cannata – G – Merrimack College
6’1, 214lb goaltender is from the US National Development team. He is expected to go late in the 7th round.

David Wohlberg – C – University of Michigan
6’1, 192lb forward is from the US National Development team. He is expected to go late in the 7th round.

Marshall Everson – LW – Harvard
6’2, 190lb forward is from Edina High in Minnesota. He is expected to go late in the 7th round.

There are always others that have been rated as part of Central Scouting’s evaluations, but these are the ones that have been mentioned in multiple mock drafts. The late rounds especially tough to pick, so just stay tuned at the end of this week to see who goes where during Faceoff Factor’s draft coverage.
