As some of Russia’s top young players decide what career path to take, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation has stepped in to try to make the decision easier. Five Russian players are being told to stay home or suffer the consequences.
The Toronto Maple Leafs set a franchise record in 2007-08 – they missed the playoffs for a third consecutive year. Everything seemed to be going wrong and fans just wanted the team to tank the season in hopes of winning the Steven Stamkos sweepstakes.

Canada and Russia will face each other in the World Championships this afternoon, with a gold medal and bragging rights on the line.

“Anything less than a gold medal is a disappointment,” said Team USA’s captain, Jeff Halpern.
There are a few teams competing in this year’s World Championships that share Halpern’s view, but only one team will win that ultimate prize, leaving many players to deal with the sting of failure. Two of those “gold or go home” teams are Canada and the US.
