If the Pittsburgh Penguins and Robert Morris University have their way, the Frozen Four will be coming to Pittsburgh.
Colonials head coach Derek Schooley revealed on a university radio show that the two have partnered to bring college hockey’s annual Final Four to the new Pittsburgh arena in 2013, 2014, or 2015.
Schooley told myself and Dan Yost at the end of “Andrew and Dan In The Afternoon” on rmuradio.com that the two sides will go through the application and bid process with the hopes of landing the event.
The Frozen Four is broadcast nationally on the ESPN networks and the 2008 edition will be hosted by the Pepsi Center and Denver University in Denver, Colorado. The MCI Center in Washington, D.C. will host it in 2009, Ford Field in Detroit will host it in 2010, the XCel Energy Center in Minneapolis will be the site in 2011, and the St. Pete Times Forum will host in 2012.
This is a continuation of an established partnership between Robert Morris and the Penguins, one that’s grown as the Colonials have emerged as a contender in college hockey since starting their program four years ago.
Stay tuned. Faceoff Factor will continue to have ongoing coverage of this story.
