NCAA Sees Quiet 2008 Draft

A lot of noise was made last year about United States prospects erupting through the first round of the NHL Draft, and that with the International Transfer Agreement in a state of flux, we were seeing an example of why the NCAA and the US development program was making a push to rival the Canadian leagues.
Not so fast.
The 2008 NHL Draft had a lot of elements, but the one thing it truly lacked was an impact from the NCAA (both current and new players). There were 5 NCAA players/prospects taken this year. There were roughly a dozen last year.
That doesn’t mean that the overall prospects of NCAA players making a rush to the NHL have dimmed. It just means that the US minor league system, both pro and amateur, still has some work to do no matter where they get their players. Remember, a lot of Canadians come into the NCAA to play for some top-flight programs. But when the NCAA is still trying to figure out an effective conference system and is still growing in the United States, we can’t expect tremendous drafts every year.
That said, despite the lack of an impact in the 1st round, the middle of the draft saw a solid representation from college hockey.
Now, on to who went where with college ties.
