Pens By The Numbers

Thanks to the Versus/Comcast/DirecTV impasse, there will be no grades today, as I was unable to watch last night’s game. That’s probably a good thing for the flightless waterfowl, as they went down to their third straight road defeat. Worse yet, they failed to score a goal for the second straight game.
So, to replace the grades, we’ll do a version of Penguins by the numbers…
0: number of goals scored the last two games
149:09: The elapsed game time since the Pens last scored a goal
23: Number of consecutive power plays without a goal.
1: The number of shorthanded goals scored during this span. That means the Pens are more likely to score when they take a penalty than when they draw one.
1: The number of shorthanded goals allowed during that span
50: The percentage of their top six defensemen who are still standing.
.873: Marc-Andre Fleury’s save percentage the last 5 games.
3.52: Fleury’s save percentage during that time.
5: consecutive pointless games for Sidney Crosby
110:47: Amount of time Sid has spent on the ice during his pointless streak. In other words, he’s approaching 2 hours of ice time without a point.
10: Games Bill Guerin has gone without a goal
2: points for Sid in the first 6 games since Geno was injured
9: points for Geno in the first 6 games after Sid got hurt a couple years ago
27:36: Alex Goligoski’s average ice time the last two games
And finally…
3: The number of Stanley Cups won by the Penguins since the Flyers last drank from the chalice.

I like the last one best….but the next to the last one is amazing too…what a monster he is!

I think that comparing Sid’s play with Geno out and Geno’s play with Sid out is a little off base. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Sid was the only major injury when Geno took over a couple of years ago (maybe Fleury was out too – but Conklin was light’s out during that stretch). Right now, Geno is far from the only big injury the Pens are suffering from. Teams are able to key on Sid because there’s no Geno, TK, Max, Gonch, Letang out there. Orpik is no offensive force, but it’ll make things very difficult if he’s out for an extended period too.

Fleury did not play well in the third period against the kings, and didn’t play well against the sharks, but overall, I think he has played well. Yesterday against boston, he was the reason we were still in the game. He made key save after key save. It’s hard to blame anyone in this situation when 6 of your better players are out. Crosby is a machine, and things will start to fall for him. It’s tough when they put out their 5 best defensive players to stop one guy. I’m not worried in the slightest, last time I checked we’re still leading the atlantic, and tied for first in the east.

Crosby hasn’t been Crosby all season, and although he’s been moving and active, he hasn’t had much spark, and very little of his trademark drive and recklessness. I have believed from the very beginning that he’s not healthy.
You’re probably right to be happy to have missed this one. It was frustrating. The Pens had a lot of offensive zone pressure, but no creativity, and almost nothing approaching a serious offensive opportunity. As the game went on, they seemed to me to have more and longer periods of looking tentative – and with this team’s strategy and style, that’s disastrous. (Though understandable once a losing streak starts to weigh on you.)
I also agree with Kenji. Fleury played well last night – not great, but well. You could tell from the first minute of the Sharks game he wasn’t gonna make it in that one, but otherwise, yeah – well.

How about
24: Number of points the Pens have through 18 games (good for T-1st in the East)

Ppirilla, yup, and we’re hoping they get back on track soon. Perhaps tonight’s home game will help spark some scoring.
