After running into some trouble with his SATs after the draft, Casey Pierro-Zabotel, Pittsburgh Penguins third round selection in this year’s entry draft, again failed to qualify academically for the Michigan Tech program, thus rendering him unable to join the squad for the start of the season.
Pierro-Zabotel will return to the Meritt Centennials of the BCHL, where he dominated offensively last year.
The commitment to return to the BCHL isn’t permanent, however. Pierro-Zabotel will have another opportunity to qualify for the Michigan Tech program again this December. If he makes the cut, he’ll join the Huskies squad for a December 15 game against the Northern Michigan Wildcats.
This is a huge blow for Michigan Tech, which touted Pierro-Zabotel as the “gem” of its recruiting class.
A source close to the situation informed me that if Pierro-Zabotel fails again to qualify for Michigan Tech, the Vancouver Giants of the WHL will increase their push to sign him. The young forward tried out for the Giants at an early age but didn’t make the cut. Since then, Vancouver has had a close eye on his development.
Stay tuned to Faceoff Factor for the latest updates on Pierro-Zabotel’s stint with the BCHL and his possible college debut

Personally, I know little about CPZ, but from what Jesse Marshall indicates, he has the potential to be a very good NHL player in the future. I’m sure he’ll respond soon with a better answer.

He’s in a Tomas Holmstrom mold. He has a good shot and will bang away in front of the net.
Personally, I was really excited when we drafted him. I just hope his development continues on the right path.
