Last year, the Lewiston MAINEiacs dominated the QMJHL in superb fashion. Cape Breton hoped to be the ones to down them in the QMJHL final. They lead over the Val d’Or Foreurs 3 games to 1 in the conference final and seemed to be well on their way to a championship berth. However, Cape Breton would never get the chance to test their mettle against Lewiston. Val d’Or won three game straight to earn their bid in the finals.

Cape Breton is back with a vengeance.

They are currently dominating the QMJHL standings with an impressive 15-4-1 record. They have registered 80 goals on the year and that’s more than any other team in Quebec.

Despite losing James Sheppard, Oskars Bartulis, J.C. Sawyer and a slew of other role players and despite the fact that they are currently featuring a boatload of rookies on their roster, the Screaming Eagles have found scoring from their QMJHL veterans.

Third year forward Dean Ouellet not only leads Cape Breton in scoring, but he’s atop the list of all the other QMJHL players. Ouellet has 14 goals and 17 assists in 20 games played this year. Not far behind him is another veteran, 4th year star Jonathan Laberge, who has also been racking up points.

Three rookie goaltenders have been making the starts for Cape Breton, dominated mostly by Roy Olivier, who has started 14 games and features a 11-2 record with a .914 save percentage and a 2.32 goals-against average.

Cape Breton will embark on a road trip this weekend that will take them up north. They play the Royun-Noranda Huskies on November 2nd and the Val d’Or Foreurs on the 3rd.

Stay tuned to Faceoff Factor to see if Cape Breton can continue their dominant run through the rest of the year.

Let’s go Capers! It would be nice to see another team from the Maritimes win it all in the Q….but I’m still hoping that my Moncton Wildcats will kick it up and challenge the Capers.

Ashely, forgive my ignorance of the Martimes, but I figured you’d be a Moose fan! I thought you were from the Halifax area?

I do live in Halifax, but I grew up in Moncton, so that is where my true loyalty lies. That being said, I’m not exactly anti-Moose – or anti-Caper, anti-Rocket, anti-Sea Dogs…well, you get the point :)
