ECHL’s 20th Season Kicks Off Tomorrow

The Johnstown Chiefs, one of the original teams in the ECHL, Thursday will play host to the rival Wheeling Nailers at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, PA to kick of the league’s 20th season.

As part of the commemorative ceremonies, B2 Networks will broadcast the game live on the Internet. Cost of the broadcast is $6, while cost of a “season pass” is $140. The pregame show, beginning at 6:35, will be free of charge.

B2 Networks, which has shown ECHL games for four years, recently signed a three-year contract to continue its coverage of the AA hockey league.

ECHL Facts
The inaugural season took place in 1988 with five teams, including the Chiefs. The league now has 25 teams in 17 states, including Alaska.

As the premier AA hockey league, ECHL teams have affiliations with 26 of the 30 NHL teams.

A total of 333 former ECHL players have gone on to play in the NHL, including two players – Francois Beauchemin and George Parros – who played for the 2006-07 Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks. Scott Gomez of the New York Rangers chose to play in the ECHL during the NHL’s lockout season.

    You know, as close as I live to Johnstown, I’ve never been to a Chief’s game. That’s sad!
