It wasn’t the opening the Johnstown Chiefs were looking for, what with the uncertainty of their future and dire need for fan support. But the Wheeling Nailers couldn’t have been more pleased with the results of Thursday’s ECHL season opener.
In common ECHL fashion, the 4-2 Nailers victory was filled with penalties, and the power play determined the game.
The Chiefs failed to record a goal on eight power play opportunities, while the Nailer cashed in on two of their 10 chances.
Interesting names of note, former Pittsburgh Penguins minor league goaltender Andrew Penner made his first start in a Chiefs uniform, while current Penguins prospect David Brown manned the pipes for Wheeling.
Mark Letestu’s third period goal marked the first goal in his professional career.
