Crunch’s Brassard Knocking on Blue Jackets’ Door
Columbus prospect and former sixth overall pick Derick Brassard is making a strong case for a promotion (14-4-13-17). The Blue Jackets’ general manager Steve Howson has already made trips to Syracuse this season to observe the 20 year-old playmaker. Howson had previously stated that Brassard would remain with the Crunch and be re-evaluated in early November, so the young center may not be very long for the NHL.

Lehtonen Injury Gives Brathwaite Opportunity to Impress
When Keri Lehtonen landed on injured reserve, the Thrashers called up their goalie of the future Ondrej Pavelec. As a result, 34 year-old journeyman netminder Fred Brathwaite became the Chicago Wolves’ starting goalie just three games into their season, and is hinting that he may have a little more left in the tank after spending all of the 06-07 season in the AHL. In seven games Brathwaite has gone 6-1 with a 1.80 GAA and 93.5 save percentage. What’s more, he’s allowed just a single goal in each of his last four starts.

Leading Scorer Gets the Call
Rochester captain and AHL leading scorer Clarke MacArthur (15-8-10-18) was recalled by Buffalo Wednesday. Prior to his recall, the left wing had a five-game scoring streak and a seven-game points streak. The Americans lost a second wingman to the NHL the same day when right wing Anthony Stewart (8-4-3-7), coming off a three-game points streak of his own, was promoted by Florida.

ECHL

Little RoadRunner Comes Up Big in October
Five-foot nine-inch, 160 pound Daniel Sisca (5-4-4-8) was named the ECHL’s Player of the Month for October. The 24 year-old Phoenix center scored two power-play goals, one shorthander and one game winner as his RoadRunners finished the month 3-2-0. Reading defenseman P.J. Atherton (7-3-3-6), Utah left wing Scott Burt (6-4-3-7) and South Carolina center Matt Reid (5-4-2-6) were runners up for the honor.

Aces Over Steelheads
The Alaska Aces stunned 3,053 Idaho fans Wednesday by scoring four straight goals to come back from an 0-2 shootout deficit to beat their hosts, the Steelheads. Kimbi Daniels, F.P. Guenette, Barrett Heisten and Matt Shasby notched consecutive shootout goals for the Aces in extending the Steelheads winless streak to three. The win vaults Alaska (5-2-1) into first place in the ECHL’s Western Division. The Aces and Steelheads will play again on Friday.

Desjardins Catching Fire
Cincinnati goaltender Cedrick Desjardins recorded his second consecutive shutout in the Cyclones 4-0 blanking of the Wheeling Nailers on Wednesday, fending off all 26 Nailers’ shots and eight power plays. The 22 year-old has a 3-1 record through four games this season to go along with a 2.00 GAA and 93.3 save percentage.
