The Tampa Bay Lightning won the National Hockey League draft lottery on Monday night. The Lightning, who’s season consisted of a league worst 31 wins and 71 points, will select first for the third time in their short history.

The Los Angeles Kings will select at No. 2, followed by the Atlanta Thrashers, St. Louis Blues and New York Islanders.

All 14 non-playoff teams have a chance to win the lottery, but the lottery winner can only move up four spots. If Carolina (14th) would have been selected, they would have moved to 10th and Tampa Bay would have still selected first overall.

The 2008 NHL entry draft will be held at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa on June 20 and 21.
Top prospect Steven Stamkos is the most highly coveted talent in this year’s pool, and has the strongest consideration to be selected first overall.

The first round draft order shapes up as follows at the moment (with 15-30 decided by the Stanley Cup Playoffs):

1. Tampa Bay Lightning
2. Los Angeles Kings
3. Atlanta Thrashers
4. St. Louis Blues
5. New York Islanders
6. Columbus Blue Jackets
7. Toronto Maple Leafs
8. Phoenix Coyotes
9. Nashville Predators (from Florida)
10. Vancouver Canucks
11. Chicago Blackhawks
12. Anaheim Ducks (from Edmonton)
13. Buffalo Sabres
14. Carolina Hurricanes

I have to laugh at the number 12 pick because it wasn’t that long ago that Brian Burke was confident that he’d get a top 5 pick this year. I bet the Oilers are laughing too.

Yeah, Edmonton sure did pick it up in the last 12-15 games…no matter where this pick is in the top 15, the Oilers still got a terrible deal. Dustin Penner isn’t anything special, he’s not worth $4+ million or a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick, much less both…Edmonton is a disaster.
