The story has been the same for Steven Stamkos all year: poise, consistency, and a great attitude.

The quiet poise the youngster operates with on the ice reminds scouts and fans of the same player he commends as his hero, Joe Sakic.

Ever since Patrick Kane’s name was announced as the first overall pick last season, eyes have shifted towards Stamkos as the next OHL phenom that will take center stage on draft day.

In a draft dominated by skilled defensemen, Stamkos is the standout offensive gem. He’s a specialist in virtually every skill needed to be a top centerman in the NHL.

Creativity plays a great role in what makes Stamkos unique. He takes every avenue available to him to make the right play. When the puck hits his stick, Stamkos makes the magic happen. His passing is crisp and accurate. He can shoot the puck any way at the drop of a hat. He changes up his angles nearly every game he plays. His smarts and vision make him a potential offensive dynamo.

What’s daunting about Stamkos game is that it extends above and beyond what is normally seen of young CHL players. Stamkos is often seen as the first player back in the defensive zone. His responsibility in his own end is nearly second to none among forwards in this draft class. His backcheck is tenacious.

Don’t get caught up looking ahead to 2009 and the John Tavares sweepstakes. Stamkos out-goaled Tavares this season and could potentially rival, if not overcome, his production at the next level.

For Tampa Bay, this star immediately takes the place of Brad Richards and should provide a youthful exuberance to the Southeast Division. Stamkos/Ovechkin battles will be worth watching.

Great review. It’s kinda cool to get a view of these guys before they get drafted.
