Luke Schenn – D – Kelowna Rockets (WHL) – 6’3 – 209lbs – Saskatoon, SASK – Shoots R – Nov 2, 1989

In this “year of the defenseman”, Luke Schenn is the prototype for a rugged, tough presence on the ice.

First and foremost, Luke brings a fantastic and long resume to the table already. He started out in Kelowna as a 15 year old defenseman and has been groomed by the team ever since. In his early years, he attests much of what he learned to Nashville product Shea Weber, who taught him the finer nuances of playing the position. Add those years in Kelowna with a gold-medal WJC performance this season and the experience of going to Russia for the Superseries and you can see that Luke has played quite a bit of meaningful games over the years.

Schenn plays a tough, physical game and is committed to his stay-at-home style first. He isn’t your normal stay at home defenseman, though. Schenn will jump into the play if he has an opportunity and can skate the puck away from danger as quickly as he can pass it out of danger.

The most impressive facet of Luke’s game is his hitting. He’s fantastic in the boards and can effectively check the opponent in a clean manner anywhere on the ice. He plays his game with an edge and will drop the gloves if called upon. Schenn consistently finishes his checks and works double time to be a presence in his own zone.

There’s a lot of upside to Schenn’s game. He has the ability to get a good shot off from the point and due to the fact that his skating is top-notch, there’s a good chance he could develop another dimension to his game before it’s all over.

The leadership that Schenn has brought to the Rockets is a grossly underrated aspect of his game. The torch from past Rocket leaders was seemingly handed to him and listening to him talk about the team you get a real sense that he carries a lot of pride and responsibility.

There are a few teams that Schenn might end up with, the Atlanta Thrashers, St. Louis Blues, and the New York Islanders are all ballpark teams for him. In any case, Schenn will provide a solid, physical presence on the blueline and is a short-term development prospect at this point.
