Schenn Brothers Poised To Take NHL By Storm

From the goonish Plager brothers of the 70’s, to the Sutter’s of the 80’s, to the Staal’s of the 2000’s, there’s a rich tradition of family in the sport of hockey.
You can add two more brothers to your list.
This year, Luke Schenn put on a defensive clinic for the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL and was rewarded when the Maple Leafs traded up to nab him with the #5 overall pick back in June. One could easily make a case for Luke Schenn as the best overall defenseman in his draft class.
However, if you travel east from Kelowna, you’ll find another talented Schenn playing in Manitoba for the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. His name is Brayden, and he captured the WHL rookie of the year honors this season with his high-tempo play and his talents with the puck.
Despite playing on opposite sides of the ice, the Schenn brothers have one aspect of their game in common: Fire.
Luke and Brayden will both lay it on the line to win.
Some might even say Brayden’s temper is one of the aspects of his game that makes him so successful. On the ice, he’s a leader. For having started the season at 16, you would think this Schenn was an overage player.
Brayden plays the game with an unreal combination of aggressiveness and finesse. At 6’0, 196lbs, he can certainly deal with the physical aspects of the game. He’s also no stranger to dropping the gloves to make a statement.
Schenn’s passing ability is keen and his vision is fine. However, at the same time, he’s perfectly capable of taking the puck on an up-ice rush single-handedly and creating chances alone.
In short, he’s a fantastic physical specimen for someone as young as he is.
Schenn has two big names ahead of him: John Tavares and Victor Hedman, both of whom I’ll be discussing all off-season, but Schenn is a diamond in the rough.
Brayden is facing some stiff competition in this draft. However, he should build off of what he accomplished last year, 71 points (28+43) in 66 games. I think he should contend for a WHL scoring title and he’ll have a chance to etch his name with the likes of Hedman and Tavares..
Whatever the case, one thing is for certain; the Schenn’s will be bringing double trouble to the NHL a lot sooner than we think.

Great article. I really like the idea of this site covering more than just the action at the Igloo. A nice alternative to the Hockey News and the just-the-fact-ma’am style of the local media.

TDP, thank you. I really slacked off on the draft this year because we had such a deep cup run. Getting an earlier start this year and going more in-depth than ever.

I agree TDP, I like seeing these articles and it gives you some guys to watch develop before the draft is really even an issue.

Jesse,
I’m not sure of your ambitions for this site, but I think you could really expand you profile in the future. You guys clearly know your hockey. (I read some of your draft analysis on the Pens board and really appreciated the hard work, knowledge and insight.)
Keep it up!

TDP, you can always tell the guys on FF what you in particular would like to see. See the article about it and post away. They pretty much try to cover anything and everything.
