Here’s our December ranking for this year’s draft class. Before reading this one, you might want to reference it with last month’s to see who jumped around and who some of the new guys are.
1. Steven Stamkos – C- Sarnia Sting (OHL) – 6’0 – 170lbs – Shoots Left – Feb. 7 1990
Stamkos hasn’t slowed down by any margin. He’s already at the 50 point mark and it’s a mere 31 games into the season. Stamkos has scored 5 more goals than John Tavares up to this point in the year, very impressive.
2007/08 OHL Statistics: 31GP – 29G- 21A –50PTS – 16PIM
2. Drew Doughty – D – Guelph Storm (OHL) – 6’0 – 185lbs – Shoots R – Dec. 8 1989
Doughty stays at #2 as he continues to have a fine year for Guelph.
2007/08 OHL Statistics: 29GP – 7G – 24A – 31PTS – 46PIM
3. Kyle Beach – C – Everett Silvertips (WHL) – 6’3 – 180lbd – Shoots R – Jan. 13 1990
Beach gets moved up a spot for December. Not to take anything away from Pietrangelo, but I really like the player Beach is becoming. He continues to produce points while getting under the skin of every team he plays against.
2007/08 WHL Statistics: 31GP – 21G – 21A – 42PTS – 104PIM
4. Alex Pietrangelo – D – Niagra IceDogs (OHL) – 6’3 – 192lbs – Shoots R – Jan. 18 1990
Alex continues to play an impressive two-way game.
2007/07 OHL Statistics: 24GP – 6G – 18A – 24PTS – 35PIM
5. Luke Schenn – D – Kelowna Rockets (WHL) – 6’3 – 209 – Shoots R – Nov. 2 1989
Luke Schenn is a great combination of all the attributes that make a solid defenseman.
2007/08 WHL Statistics: 30GP – 4G – 13A – 17PTS – 36PIM
6. Zach Bogosian – D – Peterborough Petes (OHL) – 6’2 – 190lbs – Shoots R – Jul. 15 1990
Bogosian makes a huge jump in this month’s ranking. He has a pinpoint accurate wrist shot and his vision on the ice us suburb. On the power-play, Bogosian does a fantastic job of getting open on the point and getting the puck at the net. He makes a great outlet pass and his skating is very solid. He’s dropped the gloves a few times this year, but aside from that he isn’t prone to taking lazy penalties whatsoever. His smart play has launched him into the top 10 for Faceoff Factor. He was unranked in November’s 10-player ranking.
2006/07 OHL Statistics: 27GP – 4G – 21A – 25PTS – 38PIM
7. Zach Boychuk – C – Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL) – 5’9 – 176lbs – Shoots L – Oct. 4 1989
Boychuk pretty much stays where he is because of the game experience he brings to the table and the consistency he’s been bringing to the ice on a nightly basis.
2007/08 Statistics: 33GP – 16G –18A – 34PTS – 36PIM
8. Colten Teubert – D – Regina Pats (WHL) – 6’4 – 180lbs – Shoots R – Mar. 8 1990
Teubert doesn’t show up on the scoresheet, but he’s running the show in his own zone.
2007/08 WHL Statistics: 31GP – 2G – 3A – 5PTS – 65PIM
9. Cody Hodgson – C – Brampton Battalion (OHL) – 5’11 – 182lbs – Shoots R – Feb. 18 1990
Hodgson continues to play smart, steady, consistent hockey.
2007/08 OHL Statistics: 30GP –17G – 25A – 42PTS – 14PIM
10. Michael Del Zotto – Oshawa Generals (OHL) – 6’0 – 190lbs – Shoots L – Jun. 24 1990
Del Zotto turned the heat up in November. His puck distribution has been very good.
2007/08 OHL Statistics: 28GP – 4G – 18A – 22PTS – 34PIM
11. Mikhail Stefanovich – RW – Quebec Remparts – 6’2 – 202lbs – Shoots R – Nov. 27 1989
The rookie from Belarus continues to impress playing alongside Angelo Esposito.
2007/08 QMJHL Statistics: 30GP – 15G – 16A – 31PTS – 8PIM
12. Mikkel Boedker – RW – Kitchener Rangers (OHL) – 5’11 – 201lbs –Shoots L – Dec 16, 1989
Faceoff Factor is big on Boedker. The OHL rookie has a nose for the net and finds creases and open spaces on the ice. His skating is above average and he’s adjusting well to the more physical style of play in the OHL. Smart player that will get better with time.
2007/08 OHL Statistics: 30GP – 13G – 16A – 29PTS – 4PIM
13. Nikita Filatov – F – CSKA Moscow (RSL) – 5’11 – 159lbs – Shoots L – May 25, 1990
You’ll see Filatov ranked higher on other websites, but we haven’t seen a ton of him and we’re generally leery of Russians. Filatov definitely has a flare for stickhandling, virtually all video I’ve seen of him has been impressive. However, it’s not enough to put him in the top 10.
Statistics N/A
14. Tyler Myers – D – Kelowna Rockets (WHL) – 6’6 – 194lbs – Shoots R – Feb. 1, 1990
Myers is huge but he skates pretty fluidly. He’s another guy that won’t show up on the scoreboard but will the boss in his own end. He can really throw the body around but his stick work is deadly. His long reach enables him to break up plays with ease.
2007/08 WHL Statistics: 26GP – 4G – 2A – 6PTS – 33PIM
15. Jordan Eberle – C – Regina Pats (WHL) – 5’10 – 162lbs – Shoots R – May 15, 1990
Jordan Eberle is one of the better shooters available in this draft class. He’s not a totally flashy guy, but he does his job and makes smart decisions with the puck. His shot is unbelievable and his speed is top notch. We’d like to see him add some muscle.
2007/08 WHL Statistics: 32GP – 23G – 15A – 38PTS – 8PIM

How exactly has Stefanovich “impressed playing alongside Angelo Esposito”? The two of them were barely averaging a point per game in the Q. With talented players like Kelsey Tessier and Maxime Sauve filling out the line. Not to mention the fact that Stefanovich left the team about 3 weeks ago for an extended vacation back home. I would be shocked to see Stefanovich taken anywhere in the first round.
Meanwhile you ignore Colin Wilson who matched last years #2 overall pick James Van Riemsdyck point for point the past two years with the USNTDP. Wilson is 6-1, 215 pounds, and you couldn’t create a better background. Both his father, Carey Wilson, and grandfather Jerry Wilson, were doctors AND NHL players. Colin is a top forward at Boston University even though he is probably the youngest player in the NCAA. Wilson will push Stamkos for the #1 overall pick this year.

Robert, If you watched Stefanovich play alongside Espo at the start of the year, they did extremely well together and could have doubled points if not for some missed chances and great goaltending. Considering the fact that Stefo was a rookie, I took that as a sign of true talent. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Stefanovich get taken in the first granted he returns to action. In fact, I believe Mckeen’s had Stefanovich ranked #1 in the QMJHL and #17 overall. Overall play is a bit more indicative of talent than Statistics.
As for Wilson, you’ll note that this ranking is based off of guys we’ve seen. We haven’t seen a ton of Wilson. I also don’t rank players based on what their fathers and grandfathers did. Wilson will certainly be in the top 30 when we get a better look at him, he isn’t being “ignored”.
Thanks for reading and commenting.

Even if Stefanovich put up twice the production he has to this point in the Q, leaving the team mid season to go back home for a month would earn him a DO NOT DRAFT ranking on a lot of team’s lists. I know Montreal is a bit sick of their Belarussians. They play extremely undisciplined styles and don’t like to work in traffic.
As to “what their fathers and grandfathers did”, that certainly is a big factor in the judgement of NHL teams as to when they draft a player. Many teams make a point of visiting the player at his home and speaking with his family prior to investing a high draft pick.

Understood about Stefanovich, another example would be the Bashkirov’s, one doesn’t get drafted an off they go. As I said, I’m generally leery of anyone from that area anymore, hence my comment on Filatov.
Understood about the bloodlines comment, but a lot of people fell into a huge debate about that last year with Colton Gillies and I haven’t put much stock into the past. Wilson has definitely earned a look from us and we’re working on a few things in that regard.
Robert, we hope you will continue to stop by the site. Thanks for providing discussion topics. Enjoy the WJC.
