what to know if there was any information on Scott Hartnell and Joni Pitkanen. Was just on Flyers website and both players names were removed from their team roster today.

Scott Hartnell is there to stay, with his oversized contract…

Joni Pitkanen however has been rumored to Carolina and Edmonton among other places. The Flyers have no real interest in re-signing him…you could be on to a trade there…last I heard, Niclas Wallin and something to Philly for Pitkanen, but it hinged on Wallin waiving his no trade clause. I’ll keep you up to date the second I hear something new though. Thanks for the comment!

Drury and Gomez to the Rags? This is borderline unbelievable.

Yeah Eric, it’s a killer to see that talent inside the division like that…what’s worse is Hannan went to Colorado and Sabourin went to Pittsburgh in the same minute, which had me searching for the highest window, the disappointment just doubled up on me…the numbers for the Rangers do work though…

    hi again!

well a crazy free agent signing day….
i wonder if pens offer Orpik,Christensen and Malone would Flames give us Robyn Regehr in return?
Now when they aquired Sarich ?
    just wondering….
its exciting to be a pensfan right now …

    Jul 2, 12:50 PM

Hi there, the Flames don’t need quantity they need quality for Regehr, I think they could get a better offer elsewhere. But they did acquire Aucoin, so I suppose anything’s possible.

    Jul 4, 10:54 AM

    is ths realistic ?
Gonchar,Whitney, Orpik (possible tradebate in the future) Sydor, Eaton Letang .
Adding Vaananen from free agency. and let Scuderi go up and down WBS/pens
Getttin Ossi for 1,5 to 2 millon/ years
    2 years contract.
    Gonchar-Ossi
    Orpik-Whitney
    Sydor/Eaton-Letang
    Scuderi as an injury reserve.
    just asking
if it is i think its a improved defence
    anyone agree?

  8. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 4, 11:36 AM

Henkeswe, it is not possible to allow Scuderi to go up and down. He would have to clear waivers and, though he is no superstar, there may be teams who need defensive help that might take him.

Also, the Penguins didn’t sign Scuderi as a floater. He is making NHL money and has gotten great reviews by the coaching staff. He is strictly an NHL’er.

Pairings, as they stand, will be:
    Eaton-Gonchar
    Orpik-Whitney
    Letang-Sydor
    extra: Scuderi

The only way an additional defenseman is brought in is if one of the current defensemen (Orpik or Gonchar) is traded for offensive help. So, until something like that happens, don’t bank on Vaananen, or any other free agent defenseman, for that matter.

the flyers are by far the best team in the league there unstoppable with all the moves they made there gonna be hard to beat the rangers have the best chance of beatin us

    Jul 5, 05:12 AM

Well i still think that pens need a guy like Vaananen. Markov demands to much money, Orpik/Gonchar will not be moved now they have about 3 millons left why not use it ?
Hoping for one more free agent signing a defensive defenceman.
Dont want to seem negative i think the team has become better.

Like i said before i see no reason to move gonchar at all this year.
i mean we dont know yet what kind of season Whitney and Letang will have.
Next year i say ok then i hope whitney and letang are ready to lead the offence from the defenders without the help from Gonchar, btw is he a free agent next year?
If he is that could change my opinon somewhat but to early to say how.
if they trade Orpik it will be for a defensive defenceman ?
if they would trade Gonchar it would be for a ???
hopefully someone with more insight can tell me :
Flyers the best team i say no!
Anaheim Sanjose are better teams already
Colorado , Detroit New Jersey not bad either
Flyers most improved team since last season? I say yes but they couldnt sink any further could they?
That doesnt mean they are the best team it will take them a long time to get the new pieces together if they fit together?
    thats my humle opinon

  13. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 5, 07:36 PM

Henkeswe, adding Vaananen without trading a current defenseman is a waste of money. The defensive corps already has six regulars, plus an extra in Scuderi. If another defenseman is brought it, it will be someone who makes a very small salary — like $1 mil or less. And it will be an older player or a player few people have heard of.

Trading Gonchar or Orpik would not be a move made to sure-up the defense. Instead, it would be a way to add another top-line style offenseman. Of course, neither alone would do the trick, someone else would have to be included. At that point, signing a guy like Vaananen would be a smart move. But spending money for the sake of spending money is pointless.

Tom, there is no doubt the Flyers have improved, but I wouldn’t go out claiming they are by far the best team in the league. Free agency isn’t a cure-all. Just ask the Rangers of the 1990s or the 2005-06 Penguins. Heck, even the 2006-07 Flyers were a much better team on paper than they were on the ice. Much can happen over the course of a season — including injuries, cold-streaks, etc — that shake things up big time. My point is not to knock the Flyers, but rather to keep you level-headed so that, if the team isn’t as good as you predict, you aren’t in for as big of a let-down.

First off, I appreciate the regular updates, I’ve been checking your site a couple times a day to keep up with the signings.

Second, have you heard anything about the Penguins possibly giving Thomas Vanek an offer sheet to steal him away from Bufallo. There were some rumblings here about that before free agency started but nothing since and I haven’t seen anything where he signed with the sabres. Thanks for your 2 cents!!

Ed, glad to hear you are enjoying our site. We’re still in our youth stages, but we’re doing what we can to provide what our readers want.

As for Vanek and an offer sheet coming from the Penguins, file that as unlikely. The team has to be tight with its finances, as there are many young players who will need money in the near future. This started with Whitney’s six-year deal, and will now move to a longterm deal with Crosby. Also, offer sheets are generally known as taboo — and I don’t expect to see many period, let alone from a team like Pittsburgh that can’t afford to offer unusually high contracts.

    Thanks for the comments…

How can u be so sure it will be one millon kind of money ?
    another Q
Rumors about D Morris coming here would that help us?
Vishnevski any interest in him ?
Boynton to bad of a player?
And Markov not wsilling and to expensive and to injuryprone that leaves us with ?
hmmmm Mike Weaver ? he would accept less money ?
    is he any good?
    just wondering sorry!

  17. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 6, 07:08 PM

Again, Henkeswe, the only way the Penguins add a defenseman to this team is if he costs little-to-nothing. The top-six is complete with Gonchar, Eaton, Whitney, Orpik, Sydor and Letang. Spending money on a defenseman who will be an extra is senseless. At this point, the team is looking for depth, not starters.

Now, a trade including Gonchar or Orpik could and would change this. But until that happens, there is zero possibility that the team will sign a defenseman who makes any kind of money. It’s a waste.

Morris – would be okay if he came in a trade that sent Orpik, but I think that is a lateral move, at best.

Vishnevski is a free agent who will make too much money to sit the bench. Plus, he isn’t going to sign with a team whose top six is set.

Boyton cleared waivers. He is off the radar, and shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence as the Penguins.

Markov is a player I would like to have — but again, it won’t happen.

Additionally, don’t expect depth players to take less money to come here. Depth guys make little money to begin with, so they are trying to get what they can — not reduce salary to come to a good team and sit the bench. If you are looking for defenders who might come here as free agents, look at older guys who are known leaders…guys who can fill in on a pinch, but don’t have the ability to play daily.

  18. Michael Farkas

    Jul 7, 01:27 AM

I think Orpik for Vaananen is fairly lateral, I think Ossi is a slightly better player, but if we can good value for Brooks and sign Vaananen for a $1.2 million or less, that would be something to consider…Derek Morris is a great defenseman, good two-way guy, top flight skater, can play powerplay, isn’t a liability…I would say a deal for him would be Gonchar, I would take Morris over Gonchar…I wouldn’t go so far as to say Orpik for Morris is lateral though…The Coyotes are trying to move Ed Jovanovski, if they move Jovo, I doubt Morris goes anywhere, but I would send Gonchar and something back the other way to get Morris…who has a very reasonable contract in this day and age…

Matt is right in the sense that are top seven is already set, and he also mentions a trade changes that, both are true…but we don’t have anyone under a two-way contract that will make the team (save for Letang who might)...so spending money without a trade done, or near completion is an exercise in futility…

Now you look what Cory Sarich got for a contract, you look what Roman Hamrlik got, you even look at what Darryl Sydor got…suddenly Nick Boynton doesn’t look too outrageous, doesn’t fit Pittsburgh (again, too many d-men) but, he doesn’t look as crazy anymore…thanks for the comments guys!

    hi again.
well i am back , lol.
    with more Q:

I read about the preds are willing to trade one of their defenceman.
so tradesugg. Christensen and 2 nd round pick – 08. for Kevin Klein?

What would it take to get Dan Hamhuis if it s even possible?

    Pens getting Hall or Johnson?

Pens going after former Wilds A J Thelen?
and let him play in WBS ?
Personally i think it would be a good idea

Pens trying to get Timo Seppanen or Michal Sersen over to play in WBS?

This rumors about Alex Auld are there any truth in them? Does he come to us and Sabourin goes to WBS?
IF so are we better then on the goalie side ?

Well many Q :ns hopefully Matt or someone else has the time to answer them
    Thank u!

Welcome back henkeswe. The Predators are supposedly shopping one of their defenders, but don’t expect it to be one of their better players, such as Hamhuis. Additionally, as I have said numerous times before, don’t expect them to add a defenseman until they unload a defenseman. There’s no point in adding a top-six defenseman to the roster when the team’s top six are in place. The only type of defenseman that may be brought in is a depth defender through free agency. Now, if Shero trades one of his defenseman, everything changes. But until then, I am operating under the assumption that the defense is finished.

I am not sure Hall or Johnson will be added. Hall would be a great fit, but the bottom two lines already are cluttered a bit. It might be more realistic to seek a Thorburn-type player who serves as a healthy scratch most games.

As for Seppanen or Sersen coming to WBS, I am guessing the chances are slim at this point. If either wanted to be here, they’d be here by now. And WBS’s defense is filling up quite nicely at this point…Kyle Dreibelbies would be the better person to answer this question.

  24. Michael Farkas

    Jul 12, 10:39 PM

The Preds were thought to have been moving Klein when they acquired Forsberg last trade deadline, but it ended up being Parent…Kevin Klein is a big puck mover, but not overly physical, but he would be a smart addition…kind of like a more offensive Fedor Tyutin, or like a Carlo Colaiacovo…a good addition if we could get him…he is one of Nashville’s top prospects (probably top 2 or 3 defensive prospect) which aren’t easy to pull away from a re-building team…that said though, the Preds need to hit the cap floor sooner or later, so maybe Zidlicky is off the market after all…

Adam Hall is possible for the Pens, and Aaron Johnson (I’m assuming you were referring to?) signed with the Islanders today…

I always thought AJ Thelen would round out our WBS defense nicely, but I find it unlikely to happen…he’s probably looking for a chance to at least be the “first call-up” defenseman, something that he probably wouldn’t be in Pittsburgh given Scuds as our 7th already…but anything is possible, very good thought!

Seppanen and Sersen are probably not terribly likely (but I’m not the WBS guy here) because a lot of Europeans would rather not leave a top Euro league to play second tier North American hockey…

Alex Auld has had his problems on and off the ice…if we aren’t gonna use Sabourin, then I’d prefer Jussi Markkanen or Mika Noronen (doubt he’s willing to take that role though)...Auld isn’t the best goalie available I don’t think…

    Jul 13, 04:46 AM

wedll ok matt thnxs for answering i undedrstand your point abnoujt the defence i ask u this instead who will pens then try to sign as a depth defenceman ?
    any rumnors or thoughts?

Malone will be traded as so will Christensen ?
what can pens get in return?

  26. Matt Bodenschatz

    Jul 13, 08:48 AM

I am not certain Malone or Christensen will be traded. Obviously Shero likes Christensen, or he wouldn’t have re-signed him (ex: Michel Ouellet). But if he does, it likely will be in a package with Gonchar or Orpik.

As for depth defensemen, there are no rumors, and I have no suggestions. This sort of thing isn’t that important, as 8th defensemen rarely see icetime unless there is an injury. My guess is that IF Shero adds a depth defenseman, it will be a veteran.
