Grading the Trading

I am going to live blog my grades today. This post will be continuously updated as trades occur. I will evaluate each transaction that takes place.
Tampa trades W Jan Hlavac to Nashville for a seventh round pick
Good depth pickup for the Preds.
St. Louis trades D Christian Backman to New York Rangers for a fourth round pick*
I suspect the Rangers had their eyes on a bigger prize like Dan Boyle, but Backman adds to their ability to move the puck on the blue line.
Los Angeles trades G J.S. Aubin to Anaheim for a seventh round pick
Depth move for Anaheim, and L.A. gets something for nothing.
New York Islanders trade D Marc Andre Bergeron to Anaheim for a third round pick
Good move for Anaheim, as they add yet more depth to their blue line. Isles just wanted to dump Bergeron, who didn’t work out after they got him from Edmonton.
Toronto trades W Chad Kilger to Florida for a third round pick.
Not sure why Florida wants a guy like Kilger, but Toronto adds another draft pick.
Phoenix trades F Fredrik Sjostrom, G David Leneveu and F Josh Gratton to the Rangers for G Al Montoya and F Marcel Hossa
Good move for Phoenix. This gives them Bryzgalov and Montoya in net. Rangers add some depth up front, though I don’t see where Gratton fits in.
Los Angeles trades Brad Stuart to Detroit for a second and a fourth round pick
Good move for Detroit, which is very banged up on defense right now. With uncertainy surrounding Nik Lidstrom, Stuart at least gives them a bit of insurance.
New York Islanders trade W Chris Simon to Minnesota for a sixth round pick
This one makes Jarkko Ruutu happy. This gives the Wild Todd Fedoruk, Derek Boogard, and Simon. How much is enough?
Atlanta trades Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis to Pittsburgh for Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, Angelo Esposito and a first round pick
Wow, a shocking move by Ray Shero. Sidney Crosby finally has a winger, but for how long. If Hossa resigns, the Pens made a great deal. If not, this is a horrendous trade. But for the rest of this year, adding Hossa, Dupuis, and Gill makes this a team to be reckoned with.
Toronto trades Hal Gill to the Pens for a second and a fifth
Horrible trade for the Pens, though he will help the PK out. But a second-rounder for a guy who is basically a pylon at even strength? How could Cliff fleece his son’s organization like this?
Vancouver trades W Matt Cooke to Washington for LW Matt Pettinger
Cooke adds an element of grit to the Caps. Not sure what Pettinger brings to Vancouver. George McPhee sure is going for it right now, eh?
San Jose trades D Rob Davison to the Islanders for a seventh round pick
Who cares? Davison was a spare part in San Jose, but might see some time for the injured Islanders.
Columbus trades C Sergei Fedorov to Washington for D Ted Ruth
Good move for the Jackets to get a decent prospect for a washed-up Fedorov.
Columbus trades D Adam Foote to Colorado for a first round pick
Hail, hail, the gang’s all here. The Avs seem intent on recreating their last Cup team. Trouble is, they’re all 7 years older. That is an awful steep price to pay for a rental, though I imagine they have some hope of resigning Foote.
Chicago trades F Martin Lapointe to Ottawa for a sixth round pick
Great trade for the Sens. They seem to be lacking in direction at the moment. Lapointe brings some needed leadership to the room, though his on-ice contribution will be minimal.
Florida trades D Ruslan Salei to Colorado for D Karlis Skrastins and a third round pick
Pretty even deal here. Skrastins was not seeing much ice in Colorado. Salei will add a physical element for them. These are guys I imagine Ray Shero had some interest in.
Montreal trades G Cristobal Huet to Washington for a second-round pick
Hmmmm. The Habs entrust their future to Carey Price. Very odd. But a good deal for the Caps. Kolzig has been very shaky and this shores them up in net, maybe for the next couple years if they can sign him.
Tampa trades C Brad Richards and G Johan Holmqvist to Dallas for G Mike Smith, C Jeff Halpern, and F Jussi Jokinen
Dallas gets the best player, so they win the deal. But the Lightning get lots of Cap relief and a potential starting goalie, so it could work out well for them, too.
Buffalo trades D Brian Campbell to San Jose for F Steve Bernier and a first-round pick
I like Buffalo in this one. Bernier has lots of promise as a power forward and they get a first-rounder to boot. I always thought Campbell was good, but not a top-echelon guy.
Toronto trades Wade Belak to Florida for a fifth-rounder
Great deal for the Leafs. Getting anything for a stiff like Belak is a steal.
Bryce Salvador from St. Louis to New Jersey for Cam Janssen
Lou the Devil fills a glaring hole on his blueline without giving up much of anything. David Clarkson has pretty much taken Janssen’s spot, so trading Cam for a guy who can move the puck a bit makes the Devils stronger. Devils win this one.
First, a little catch-up work…
Peter Forsberg to Avs: A
Anytime you can add a key component without giving up anything, that’s a good move. Forsberg is a shell of his former self, but with him and the other injured Avs coming back, look for the Avs to make it to the dance.
Alexandre Picard and a pick to Tampa Bay for Vinny Prospal
Good deal for the Lightning here. Philly gives up a lot for a marginal rent-a-player. Picard might have been their best prospect, but Paul Holmgren is desperate to make the playoffs. Tampa wins this one.

Alexandre Picard is a good prospect. I was getting so sick of the fools over at the NHL board talking about how Philly got prospal for nothing….

I think that was a good move for The Caps they are going to be good the next few years and they need a goalie really bad.

We should could have used some help …
But its seems that RS and pens board or whoever decides to do nothing…..
A little bit boring, really and i think will cost us a shortlived stanley cup run but i can be wrong….
We can have good use for guys like:
Ruutu ,Satan ?,Salvador,Salei, Gill? and Mckee?.
Rumors about Kilger makes me even sader…. :(((((

Forgot about Ruutu and Ladd. Man, multiple Whitneys, multiple Staals, and now multiple Ruutus – playing Carolina’s gonna suck even more now!

Man Dallas is going to be tough to beat. If I were the Wings I would want no part of them in the playoffs.

Caps made a decent goalie move, but not sure I see the wisdom in their other moves, particularly Federov.

I think the Hossa trade is going to be a make or break move for Shero. If the Pens get the Cup, or Shero re-signs Hossa for a reasonable price, it’s going to go down as a reasonable deal. If the Pens go out in the first round and Hossa leaves to free agency, this could end up sending Shero out of town.
Honestly, this is a move to make when you think you can go for the Cup now. I’m a bit surprised he did it. This Sunday’s game against the Thrashers just got a whole lot more interesting, though!

I’m going to ignore the elephant in the dressing room.
Go Pens!!

Oh, and I’m glad we got the right Hossa that was dealt today. Hehe.
...Crap, there’s that elephant.

I’m shocked .. this is surreal !! I’m giddy!! What the hell happened!!?
But this couldn’t actually be__Shero’s__move, could it?!
I mean, there we were on Deadline day with Shero doing his usual thing .. nothing.
All of a sudden .. wham .. !! .. Shero appears to do a complete 180 .. but .. again; this couldn’t be Shero’s doing .. could it?! I mean .. does anyone think that maybe Shero was only playing possum for all those months in terms of his ‘stated objectives’ ..?
Is Mario the ‘elephant’ referenced in the above posting?
And if this was Mario’s “thing” .. then I wonder how much his influence is going to factor into any-or-all future aspects of decision-making in this organization? Wow .. I guess that’s a whole separate topic for discussion.
Wow .. I just hope to hell they can sign Hossa before the first of July. But this really makes us a true powerhouse going into the playoffs, assuming Crosby will be OK in his return. How can anyone stop our two scoring lines as a tandem?!! We have the most lethal one-two scoring punch, in terms of lines, in the NHL .. by far!! Whew!!
And, yeah .. Gill is somewhat of a pylon at even strength, as Mike said .. but someone was STILL needed desperately to man our goal-crease, especially on the PK of course. I wish we could have gotten a better “strong defensive D-man” .. but at least Gill addresses a specific glaring need for this team.

Hey .. folks .. if it WAS Mario who twisted Shero’s arm into this .. I’m GLAD it happened!!
Shero’s arm apparently__needed__to be twisted in order for him to wake the hell up and actually address the glaring needs of this team. He could have waited FOREVER until the “right time”.
And, yes .. the goal-scoring winger for Sid__was__the main priority .. because Malkin has clearly shown what he can do as a center__if__he’s given enough ice-time and if he’s given decent wingers of his own. By getting Hossa, Sid’s line will now command priority attention from defenses, which will allow Malkin’s line to be even more effective .. and of course vice-versa. This gives the Penguins a devastating tandem of scoring lines .. and this should be an unstoppable combination of offensive power, which should get the Penguins into the Stanley Cup Finals at least .. and which also makes them likely to win the Cup this year .. !!!
With a scoring-line tandem like this ..
it puts the Penguins over the top .. at least for this season. And they ought to be able to sign Hossa .. at least there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to sign him. There’s actually room under the Cap to do it, without having to lose anyone important.

Michael, in fact, this was Shero’s doing and not Mario’s as you suggest. Shero said he had been looking into this since the All Star break. Believe it or not, he actually is a good general manager. It’s time to give him a bit of credit.
Michael
Feb 29, 10:25 AM
But .. it’s such a total 180 for Shero.
It doesn’t make sense, according to what Shero kept saying for so long.
Why would Shero do such a complete, sudden, and drastic 180 on his stated philosophy and plan? I find it bizarre.
Michael
Feb 29, 11:03 AM
Well .. then again .. Shero hasn’t sold the farm. We still have Letang and Staal, and we have a lot of good prospects in the pipeline. So I probably should not have called this a “180” reversal, afterall.
But I also have to say that something within me (intuition) is now telling me that the players acquired by the Penguins in this Deadline deal are not going to pan-out very well for us. We could have done a lot better than Gill and Hossa, for the assets we gave.
Then again, I’m feeling like I just need to stop posting for awhile, here.
