Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals

This was a hard fought game with Nicholas Backstrom providing the game winning goal with 28 seconds. However, he will not get credit for it in the box score because he put it into his own goal.

Take a look at the Three Stars in this game for proof that it lived up to its billing. Malkin had three assists to Ovechkin’s two. Ovechkin still leads the points race by three. Sidney Crosby was also credited with two goals. However, one of them came off of Washington rookie, Nicholas Backstrom’s clearing attempt. With 28 seconds left and the game tied 2-2, Backstrom tried to clear the puck from the front of the net but put it in his own goal. Jordan Staal added an empty-netter to complete the score sheet.

Edmonton Oilers 6 – Chicago Blackhawks 5 OT
Andrew Cogliano scored the game winning goal in overtime to give the Oilers the win. The Chicago Blackhawks were once again without Nikolai Khabibulan. Edmonton and Chicago both have a chance to get into the playoffs. However, they will need to string together some wins and hope for help from others.

Boston Bruins 0 – New York Rangers 1 SO
Nigel Dawes was the only player to get a puck past a goaltender in this game. And that did not happen until the shootout. Alex Auld stopped 35 shots but was not able to stop Dawes’ shootout attempt. Lundqvist recorded 29 saves to record the shutout.

Nashville Predators 3 – Detroit Red Wings 4
Lidstrom returned to the ice Sunday for the Red Wings and got a win in his return. However, it almost did not come to pass. Though Detroit was leading 4-0 entering the third period, they gave up three goals in the final ten minutes. Detroit was able to stop the bleeding and come out with the victory.

Tampa Bay Lightning 3 – Columbus Blue Jackets 5
The Lightning and Blue Jackets were tied at three, but Columbus scored two goals in the final five minutes to get the win. Columbus could still possibly make the playoffs. However, they will have to play better than they have recently, going 4-4-2 in their last ten.

Tomas Plihal scored on a penalty shot in the first period to make it 2-0 in favor of the Sharks. The Wild scored one in the second and one in the third to force overtime. However, Patrick Marleau scored the winner in the shootout to give the Sharks the extra point.

Montreal could have overtaken New Jersey for the lead in the Eastern Conference. However, the Ducks were too strong for them in this one. Anaheim, 7-3 in their last ten, are trailing the Sharks (by three points) and the Stars (by four points) for the lead in the Pacific Division.

Colorado Avalanche 0 – Dallas Stars 3
Marty Turko recorded the shutout with 19 saves, helping the Stars end a three game losing streak and the Avalanche end a six game win streak. Forsberg missed this game because of a groin injury and is listed as day-to-day. Colorado’s Jose Theodore was pulled after the second period in favor of Peter Budaj. Theodore gave up three goals on 21 shots.
