Sportsnet is reporting that Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn will miss game three of the Eastern Conference Finals after being struck in the face with a puck.
He will undergo further observation and his status for games four and beyond will be determined at a later time.
Already without top defender Kimmo Timonen, the Flyers will be forced to dig deep into their pool of defensemen to field a group of six.
Sportsnet indicates that Ryan Parent is the most likely candidate to skate on the Flyers’ blueline.

Here’s a direct quote from Roger Millions, reporting from Philly for Sportsnet: “[Colburn’s] status for the remainder of the series is extremely doubtful.”
Not sure how much stock to put into that, especially since it’s the playoffs and people play with all kinds of injuries, but 50 stitches and a possible broken orbital bone doesn’t sound good at all.
I hate to see any player go down with an injury like this, but if it’s going to happen, thankfully it wasn’t a Penguin.

Ashley, I agree that it’s difficult to make any sort of assumption based on a media report. There are several reasons I say this: first, as you said, players will play through anything in the playoffs. If he can get a helmet and a cage on his head and he can skate without any affects (dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, etc), he just might play. Secondly, in the playoffs, teams often put out false reports or misleading reports to lure their opponents into a precarious position. In other words, the prognosis of missing the series could just be a way for the Flyers to lure the Penguins into carelessness.
I doubt either of these is the case. Clearly, Couburn took a serious shot to the head, and I highly doubt that, after being admitted to the hospital randomly in the middle of the day, he is okay. I doubt he returns, and that’s great news for the Penguins. Even so, I hate to see any player hurt, and I wish Couburn nothing but the best.
