Holmstrom Hurt

After a run-in with Penguins defenseman Hal Gill last night, Red Wings power forward Tomas Holmstrom was slow to get up and reportedly did not see a shift the rest of the game.

In an interview with the NHL Network, Red Wings officials would not discuss the injury, but acknowledged that he would be re-evaluated at some point today.

Preliminary discussion has Holmstrom suffering anything from a lower body injury to some sort of head injury.

While it is unclear how serious the injury is, it is important to note that Red Wings officials are being quiet for a reason.

If the hard-nosed Swede is injured significantly, this would be a huge break for the Penguins, and especially Gill, who can focus their efforts on the remaining offensive threats without worrying about “Homer” in front of the net.

Faceoff Factor will stay close to this story, bringing updates as they are made available.

Update 2: Stan Savran reports on Sportsbeat that TSN announced moments ago that Holmstrom’s status, not just for Game Four, but for the entire series, is uncertain.

The major Canadian sports network said the injury is a groin injury that is bordering a sports hernia.

Update 1: mLive.com is reporting Holmstrom will not miss any time.

“He’s a little sore but he feels OK,’‘ Red Wings GM Ken Holland said to mLive reporter Ansar Khan. “Our expectation is he’ll be in the lineup Saturday.”

Khan suggests the injury is to his lower body — possibly a knee — as he was seen leaving the arena with a limp.

Reminds me of when Lougainis hit his head off the diving board.

    Karma, ladies and gentlemen.

    I’m with you, Jesse.
He can dish it out, but he can’t take it.

While i’d hate anyone to be injured seriously, having him out wouldn’t be the worst thing for the Pens that’s for sure.

Now if they’d just dress Laraque and let him “slide” into Osgood. . . (just kidding, sorta). Hate to see anybody hurt, but I agree that it wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen for the pens.

Careful kids, diving is dangerous. You could get hurt.

TSN is reporting that Holmstrom’s injury could be worse than first thought. I guess he may have aggravated a groin or sports hernia injury, and if the muscle is torn, then he’ll be out of the lineup. This is just speculation and we’ll know more tomorrow, but it’s definitely making people talk…

Ashley, talk about timing — look at the time you posted the update and look at the time I posted my update. Great minds think alike. That’s what they say, anyway.

Hopefully we won’t have to watch Holmstrom cower and flinch when he and Gill stand toe to toe anymore.

I am glad he is most likely out, although I don’t wish harm upon anyone.

I also found it funny that after the injury happened during last night’s game, Ruutu apparently skated by him and told him it must be time for him to think about retiring. He makes me laugh.

Talbot actually asked him if “that hurt” and then Maltby decided to get involved and Ruutu told him to sit down and that he should retire… good advice all around

Haha yeah Max is indeed a riot..he was on ‘Off the Record’ last night with Laraque and it was one of the funniest episodes I’ve seen in quite some time.

Each interview I’ve seen from the Wings regarding the issue leads me to believe that Holmstrom is not going to play, unless things change and he’s able to go for game 4. Just a hunch, but that seems to be what I’m picking up on their demeanor.
