TSN is reporting that the Tampa Bay Lighting plan to hire ESPN hockey analyst and former coach of the Los Angeles Kings, Barry Melrose, as their head coach.
Melrose, who did stints in the AHL and CHL before leading the Kings to the cup Final in 1993, was pushed for by Lightning management to “help sell the game in the state of Florida”.
The move now makes John Tortorella one of the best available coaches on the market in addition to ex-Avalanche coach Joel Quenneville. Two Canadian teams, the Leafs and Senators, both could be hot-to-trot for Torts in the upcoming months.
Melrose took the Los Angeles Kings to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993 on the wings of superstar Wayne Gretzky. He will have another superstar to coach this year in future first round draft pick Steven Stamkos.

The Canadian media would salivate if Torts is hired by the Leafs or Sens.

With the media coverage that the Leafs get, and the amount of verbal gold that Tortorella unleashes it would be a match made in heaven… from the people on the outside, of course.

Hope Melrose won’t wear his “Don Cherry” suits and ties he got for this playoff season on ESPN!

Nothing will be decided for the Maple Leafs until they pick on some poor soul to become their new GM. {At least I don’t think they named anyone yet}.
