A tip of the hat to Faceoff Factor commenter “Pens1967” for bringing to our attention that the NHL has increased its salary cap to an impressive $56.7 million for the 2008-09 season.

The $6.4 million increase in the cap also comes with an increase in the salary floor to $40.7 million. The individual player cap is $11.34 million.

This marks the fourth consecutive year the salary cap has increased since the restriction was put in place following the lockout.

Noteworthy is the fact that the salary floor is now higher than the initial salary cap of $39 million.

OK, so the obvious question is how does this affect the Pens? Did Shero know this for a while or is this new news and help with the potential signing of Hossa?

I’m sure he’s know this for a while — well, maybe not the exact number, but a solid estimate. Keep in mind they have a full-time capologist, whose primary job is to focus on the money side of the sport. So, with that being said, I think the answer is no.

What we have to sit back and look at is how much these players (Malone, Orpik, Hossa) are worth to the Penguins. Clearly, their value is high around the league, but clearly, few teams have the top-end talent the Penguins have — which is a good reason they’re more willing to spend the money on these types of players.

I think Shero has a price in mind for each of his free agents and, regardless of what happens, he’s not going to spend more.

This is not only good news for a team like the Penguins even if Burkle is willing to spend to the max. We need wingers and with a bad free agent class and lots of UFA:s among our last year players higher cap means higher salaries for UFA:s. Inflation on the free agent market will be a result of this. Specially since it high demand and low supply as it is…
