TSN is reporting that a source close to Marian Hossa confirmed the Sovakian winger won’t make a decision today.
“(Hossa will) take some time to consider his options,” according to TSN.
Believed to have offers on the table are the Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, and New York Rangers.

Edmonton and the Rangers are both up against the salary cap.

OK, here’s the breakdown:
Edmonton: cur hit – 52.138; space – 4.56
If reported offer is 7-9M, that puts them nearly 10% over the cap. They would have to drop at least 5M in salary. Souray is the only player who’s salary would cover the cost of a Hossa signing. Otherwise, Edm would have to lose at least 2 players. I think they are a complete stalking horse being pushed by Winter.
NYR: cur hit – 49.162, space – 6.837
A 7M+ offer puts them over the cap, too.
They still need to sign Sjostrom and Dawes. Another team that would have to lose salary to sign Hossa.
Montreal: cur hit – 45.818; space – 10.881
Could fit 7-8M for Hossa. They have only 5 defensemen under contract and no backup goalie. They also have 3 RFAs, Gorges, O’Byrne and Grabovski to sign. The Habs have only SIX (6) players under contract for 09-10 and NONE (0) past 10-11.
None of those teams appear on the surface to have the real resources to sign Hossa.

Wow, very, very nice look at the scenario.

Thanks, Matt. Not sure what it says that I had nothing better to do at 0400, though. :)
I have to say I was completely blown away by the fact that Montreal has not one player – NONE – signed for 2010-11.
If I’m Marian Hossa and looking to sign a long term contract, I’m wondering what kind of team I’ll be playing on after Gainey shoots his wad on trying to win a Cup for the Habs 100th year anniversary. Will I be on a team that’s in a complete rebuild mode in two years?

Yeah, I think the longer this goes, the more likely Hossa stays in Pittsburgh.

I think I’d like to be a fly-on-the-wall listening to the conversations between Hossa and Winter. :)
