The Chicago Blackhawks have announced that centre Jonathan Toews will be their new captain this season. He has been one of the team’s alternate captains since December.
The 20-year-old becomes the third youngest captain in the history of the National Hockey League, following in the footsteps of Sidney Crosby and Vincent Lecavalier.
‘‘Jonathan deserves this honor, he is a tremendous individual and a wonderful leader on and off the ice,’‘ Chicago GM Dale Tallon said. ‘‘He has experience in captaining teams from his World Junior appearances and guys follow his lead in our locker room.’‘
Toews was selected by Chicago third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. He had 24 goals and 54 points in 64 games last season, his first in the NHL.

Mehh…Little too soon in my opinion. But looking at the Hawks roster, they don’t have much veteran leadership on that team at all…Bobby Lang…that’s about it…

Chicago is clearly going for the ‘Pittsburgh’ model of rebuilding a team, including naming a 20-year-old their captain. I actually don’t mind this move because I think Toews does have that leadership instinct and I think he’ll do well.
