Bruins, Hurricanes Unveil Third Jerseys

Last year we had the anticipation of 30 new uniforms, as the NHL switched from classic style jerseys to the high-tech Rbk Edge jerseys. This year, we have, to a lesser extend, an excitement surrounding roughly half of the NHL teams adding a third jersey.

Within the previous two days, two teams have unveiled their “Sunday best,” leaving roughly 16 teams to do so.

Icethetics has pictures of the unveiling ceremonies in Boston and Carolina, so we’ll stick to description.

The Bruins have chosen to go with a simple, vintage design. The primary color is black, with yellow and white stripes on the arms and the current logo patched on the shoulders. The logo is the old design with a bear topped off by an arched “Bruins.”

Carolina, on the other hand, doesn’t have much heritage to pull from without reaching to Hartford, so they opted more for a simple alternative. Utilizing the same style as their home and road jerseys, the Hurricanes changed the primary color to black and switched out the hurricane logo with their alternate logo, which is a tattered hurricane flag with a hockey stick as its pole.

Overall, I like both designs and feel they’ll be nice additions if used appropriately. In the past, we’ve seen teams take advantage of their third jerseys, wearing them on a regular basis.

The way I see it, a third jersey is a novelty that should be worn rarely — possibly only for Sunday games.

I suppose we’ll see what happens.

Here is a list of the remaining teams expected to unveil third jerseys, according to Icethetics. It also should be noted that the Montreal Canadiens are expected to unveil two centennial jerseys, which aren’t included on the list below.
