With news that the Carolina Hurricanes and center Eric Staal were close to a contract extension, it’s no surprise that a press conference has been scheduled for this afternoon.

TSN is reporting that the deal could be as long as seven years and worth as much as $8 million per season.

More on the story as it develops…

Update @ 4:45

Per TSN, Staal’s contract is a seven-year deal worth $57.75 million total, giving him a cap hit of $8.25 million per year.

‘‘This is a great day for hockey in the Carolinas, to know that our franchise player will be with us for at least another eight seasons,’‘ said Hurricanes’ general manager Jim Rutherford, according to TSN. ‘‘Eric has been a special player for us right from the start. We know that he is just coming into his prime right now, and will continue to grow as a player.’‘

Staal added, ‘’...It is a nice feeling now to have it out of the way and not get the questions the whole season about an extension and focus on the hockey.’‘

Now, let’s just hope that this gets the ball rolling, and another Staal brother signs a long-term extension in the next few days. Obviously not for that kind of money, but here’s to hoping we get #11 signed soon.

My guess is that, once camp starts, negotiations will be put on hold until the season ends.

    I agree.

That’s why I think if he’s not signed within a few days, we should trade him and a lower tier player or a prospect….... for Gaborik.

    I can dream, right?
