Flyers name Mike Richards captain for the 2008-09 season
Mike Richards has been named the 17th captain of the Philadelphia Flyers as announced by Flyers’ GM Paul Holmgrem.
“It’s obviously a privilege to be part of such a traditional organization, and be captain of it,” he said. “I am going to do my best to do it. We have a lot of great team leaders right now on our team, and you don’t have to change anything. I think everybody really helps out around the dressing room. There are so many leaders, you just kind of have to do your own thing and more worry about yourself and help out where things are needed.”
Richards, 23, begins his 12 year contract extension this season.
Simon Gagne was back on the ice for the first time since suffering a concussion that caused him to miss most of the season last year. Gagne skated on a line with Danny Briere and Mike Richards during two scrimmages.
“It was fun to be back on the ice with the guys,” said Gagne. “I’m very confident that everything is going to be okay. Right now, I’m confident everything is going to be okay but I need to build [confidence].”
Antero Nittymaki will miss 4-to-6 weeks after having surgery on his hip. Flyers GM Paul Homgren stated:
“Last Friday, Antero had a small surgical procedure done on his left hip where he had some fluid drained and also some loose bodies that were in his joint. This was more of a clean-up process performed by Dr. Thomas Byrd at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Right now, we anticipate him being out for four-to-six weeks. Obviously, that could change depending on how Antero feels. We will continue to monitor him. He has already begun he rehab process and we will see how it goes.”

J.S. Aubin signs a one-year contract with the Flyers terms were not disclosed.
“Jean-Sebastien is a veteran goalie with quality NHL experience,” said Holmgren. “We feel his experience, along with his ability as a goaltender, makes him an ideal fit for our organization.”
“I’m happy to come to a great organization like the Flyers,” said Aubin. “I know a lot of the guys on the team. They have a lot of faith in me and it is a really good fit for me to come here.”
Aubin has appeared in 218 NHL Games with three clubs. He will bring his 80-83-16 record to back-up Marty Biron in Philadelphia.
