Ryan sent to AHL

Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks was sent to the AHL last week. The winger, who was drafted second overall in the 2005 entry draft was expected to make the team this season, but cap issues have forced the Ducks to do without the prospect for now.

“It was a difficult move for us, but in the new world of the NHL, the cap issues are the cap issues,” said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. “He’s a young player who has made huge strides and he demonstrated that in training camp. His performance was that where it made it difficult for us to reassign him today. I just want him to go down and be the best player he can possibly be. It’s not a question of if he’s going to play in the NHL, it’s when.”

In other Ducks news, LW Joakim Lindstrom was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Blackhawks, and Anaheim picked up D Nathan McIver off waivers from Vancouver.

Setoguchi takes advantage of time on top line

In San Jose’s final pre-season game, Devin Setoguchi was promoted to the top line with Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. The move paid off as each scored a goal, with Setoguchi’s wraparound goal in the third tying the game, and Thornton scoring the OT winner.

“It paid off for everyone,” said coach Todd McLellan. “Devin had a tremendous night. If I’m a player on this team, I’d work real hard to do anything I can to keep that position. That would be Seto right now.”

Coyotes call fans

Talk about using players to market the game – the Phoenix Coyotes teamed up with the team’s sales and customer-service departments to call people interested in becoming season-ticket holders or buying partial plans.

“People have been pretty excited,” said forward Viktor Tikhonov. “Everybody’s been asking questions about the last few games we’ve had, which has been pretty cool. It’s been a whole lot of fun. This is my first time doing this, so there’s a little bit of an adrenaline rush to it.”

Kings sign O’Sullivan

The Los Angeles Kings announced today that they have signed Patrick O’Sullivan to a three-year contract. The deal will see the forward earn $4 million this season, but his cap hit will be just under $3 million.
