After 14 NHL seasons, four Stanley Cups and one Conn Smythe Trophy, Scott Niedermayer may have played in his last game.
The 33-year-old defenseman reportedly is contemplating retirement just weeks after winning the Stanley Cup with his brother Rob and the Anaheim Ducks.
But he has not yet made decision — at least according to the following quote from ESPN.com:
“I think every player, as they get older, begins to think about how much longer they’re going to play. I know I think about it.”
If he goes out, the NHL community certainly will lose a great player, a great ambassador and a great leader.
Over the years, Niedermayer has found a way to help his teams win. In fact, he has won the Stanley Cup, the Memorial Cup, the Olympic gold, the World Championships, the World Cup of Hockey, and the World Junior Championships.
That’s an impressive slate for anyone, let alone a player in his early thirties.
Needless to say, Niedermayer has earned the privilege of retiring early and of retiring while he is on top.
