Seems like a slow start

Awful Quiet!
With all the waiver wire action, I would have thought that there would be more movement early.

Definitely a slow start..things will pick up at or around noon..

as I am checking this page, I had a flashback to 95. I was in my college library checking whatever text only internet sports site/BBS I could access via their computers. In green monochrome I read that Marty Straka had been traded to Ottawa for Troy Murray and Norm MacIver. Who would have known it would turn into an annual tradition, although instead of research, I should be working…

Can anyone tell me anything about Wozniewski and why we would give up Richmond for him?

Since Kunitz seems to be having the desired effect of being a spark plug on the ice and the team is playing well, I’m not sure another trade is all the useful at this point.
Personally, I’d rather them stand pat and make another run at Hossa in July to accommodate Crosby’s need for a winger. They will not have Satan, Fedotenko or Gill on the books and that would pretty much cover 6-7M/yr for Hossa. They have enough depth on defense at WBS to make up for Gill and they can break in a young forward to replace Fedo.

Why is a good question. Is he a possible replacement for someone on the move?
Matt Bodenschatz
Mar 4, 01:42 PM
@Kevin, Wozniewski is a depth defenseman. This, to me, seems like a request from Richmond to get out from a deep depth chart.
@David and Fed, Cup experience. Also, Godard won’t be playing come playoffs — assuming the Pens make it. They need a replacement for the fourth line, and Adams brings PK skills and grit, plus that ever-needed Cup experience.
Zack Dawson
Mar 4, 01:47 PM
Agreed Matt. Both moves are depth signings for a potential playoff run. I like Adams, he’s a perfect fourth line winger who will get a garbage goal on occasion while contributing to the PK. And oh yeah, that Cup experience.
Richmond is in the position of being a good prospect who will never be able to make the big club in our system. Too much talent ahead of him. Hope St. Louis can give him a chance. Wozniewski is a decent stay at home guy with some size, which isn’t bad to add to our blue line.

Calgary is the early trade deadline winner it seems.

Mar 4, 02:05 PM
Is it possible that Gill is out? Wozniewski is a big defensman (6’4’‘, 220), 5 years younger than Gill, probably faster…I like Hal Gill, but with his speed and shying away from physical contact, wouldn’t he be better served as a trading chip?
Matt Bodenschatz
Mar 4, 02:14 PM
Calgary looks to be working on something else, as they’re now over the cap.
Matt Bodenschatz
Mar 4, 02:17 PM
@Scotty, I actually think Wozniewski either goes to the AHL or stays as a healthy scratch. Gill is a proven playoff performer, and Wozniewski has played one game this season. He’s depth, and nothing more.
Now, is it possible Gill goes in a trade and another experienced, capable defenseman is brought in? Possibly, but still not likely.

Can Adams take faceoffs?
Fed
Mar 4, 02:26 PM
recchi to Boston
Matt Bodenschatz
Mar 4, 02:31 PM
@Steve, no. He’s a pure winger, but he’s quite gritty. I still think we’ll see a faceoff-winning center.
Zach Boslett’s Rumor Mill is saying Pens targets at the moment are Guerin and Ruutu.
@Fed, good eye.
Moq
Mar 4, 02:42 PM
Ruutu and Guerin?
That would be anti-climactic.
Fed
Mar 4, 02:43 PM
Not thrilled about either Guerin or Ruutu. Ruutu cost more than the Pens valued him, hence they let him go.
Guerin is too old. Unless they give up almost nothing for him. Don’t know his salary.
ScottyG
Mar 4, 02:52 PM
The Maple Leafs apparently have denied that Moore was dealt to Chicago.
Matt Bodenschatz
Mar 4, 02:52 PM
@Moq, for sure…but don’t rule out a sneaky last-minute type deal for Shero.
@Fed, I agree Guerin is too old and not what the Penguins need. Ruutu, however, was offered the same money by Pittsburgh, but Shero didn’t want to add a third year. For all intents and purposes, the third year is now gone, so Shero may be able to grab Ruutu on the “two-year” contract he originally wanted to sign him for.

Mar 4, 02:58 PM
I keep hearing Antropov is coming.
Any word?
Fed
Mar 4, 02:59 PM
Guess I better get used to Guerin. Wonder what they gave up?
Steve
Mar 4, 05:24 PM
Good job by Shero so far. He’s given up nothing off his roster, yet he’s made them more physical and better. I would have liked truer grit, but Adams is a grinder and good on the PK. Someone tell me who’s going to win faceoffs on this team?
DaBich
Mar 4, 05:31 PM
Guerin? Ehh..veteran presence? i guess…
He still might have a year or two in him.
I can’t place this Adams person.
Matt Bodenschatz
Mar 4, 05:41 PM
@Steve, I agree. He’s done well. He gave up a lot in picks/prospects last year and the year before to acquire Roberts, Laraque, Gill, and Satan. This year he gives up one pick, which can be no better than a third rounder. Keep in mind, the Pens have two thirds, one which was acquired from Tampa Bay over the summer.
@Dabich, Guerin brings grit and a front-of-the-net presence to the power play and possibly one of the top two lines. He’s also a veteran and former captain, though I’m not sure how much that played into the deal. Lastly, he’s a free agent at season’s end, so he’s a pure rental and most certainly won’t be back.

Mar 4, 05:48 PM
The pens have supurb young talent right now, they dont need all that many high draft picks because those types of players demand big pay checks, we need to bring in pure goal scorers after this season and drop some of the excess 3rd and 4th line idiots… i think we could potentially have gotten one of the goal scorers we need (for the future) in tangradi… as for today, shero gave up nothing for something, good day
Jon
Mar 4, 07:03 PM
I would’ve rather seen Ray Shero do what he did today. Didn’t really trade any assets for rentals or over pay for scorers. And there’s a decent free agent class this summer.
