The expert picks from ESPN are out and Burside, Bucci, and LeBrun all picked the Pens in 6. That no talent hack Melrose once again picked against the Pens in 7. Keep it up mullet you’ve been wrong since April.

Surge, we’ll leave these guys out, as they go by pseudonyms, and we’re looking for more credible media types. But it’s nice to note in the comments, anyway.
Brandon, thanks. I added a few of the other guys as well (Barnaby and Hradek).
Maggie the Monkey will be making her pick soon, so we’ll get that up when available, as well.
Keep them coming!

I really enjoy that the pseudonyms don’t count, but Maggie does.

Thanks, Tom! I added a few more (Greenberg, Johnston, and Beacon), as well.
@Brenden, she’s legit. Straight out of TSN. How much more credible can one get? Haha. I think my thought is that I don’t just want random bloggers included. Now, if it’s a mainstream blogger like Puck Daddy, Eric Mirtle, or others of that ilk, I’m fine with it. But just random bloggers — nah. The list would get way too crowded.

I was worried Melrose would jinx the Pens by picking them. I’m relieved he picked Det.
It doesn’t get any better than to have Red Fisher pick the Pens.
Matt, did you mean James Mirtle?

Unfortunately, this will be Maggie’s last year of picks. She’s retiring after this one last pick.
A farewell “Ooh ooh aah aah” to you, Maggie.

@Pens, ya, not sure where I got Eric from. Doesn’t even make sense..haha.
@Mike, Maggie’s had a wonderful run. Hopefully she can go out on top — assuming, of course, she picks Pittsburgh. otherwise, she can go out on a negative note.

I’ve noticed an odd trend among the media members who pick Detroit (and actually provide a justification for it, unlike the ESPN folks). They seem to qualify their picks with, “if Datsyuk, Lidstrom and Draper are healthy for the Finals…” or some variation on that theme.
Considering they’ve all missed multiple games during important playoff games, I think it’s safe to say that even if they play in the Finals, they won’t be anywhere near 100% healthy. Factor in that they’ll only get two days off between series, and then have an immediate back-to-back situation, and I have to think that the Pens’ overall better health could play a big factor in this series.
I’ll also note that among the media members picking the Penguins, the lack of health among the Detroit players has come up quite a bit, as well…

Good points, Ben. You’ll also notice that, among those picking the Wings, most are indicating a seven game series. To me, that shows that they think the Wings will just squeak by; whereas, with those picking the Penguins, most are saying five or six games, which would indicate a less balanced series.
Last year I picked the Penguins hoping they would win and thinking they might be able to. This year, I am picking the Penguins feeling confident that they can and will win.

On my way home from work, I usually list to Hockey Night in Canada Radio on Sirius. On today’s show, Jeff Marek (host) and Scott Morrison of CBC Sports both predicted Detroit in 6. I just took a quick look on the CBC Sports website for a supporting link, but came up empty.

Listening to NHL Home Ice radio on Sirius XM this afternoon, this is what the afternoon show “In the Slot” Had to say;
Phil Esposito (yes, the hall of famer) Picked the Pens in 6; sighting that the short turn around, the 3 games in 4 nights and the injuries to the Wings all add up to the Pens taking advantage, & winning at home.
Mike Ross (his co-host) Picked the Wings in 6, saying he was actually going to pick the Pens, but since his and Espo’s prediction record is tied, he figured one of them needs to win. Not really an expert’s method if you ask me.
Boomer Gordon (who is ever present in all of the afternoon programming on this station) said the Wings in 5! He said the depth on the Wings is just too too much.
I’m certainly no expert, but 5 seems like it would have to be terribly one sided and I just can’t see one team dominating the other here. But we’ll see… that’s why they play the game!
Go Pens!!!!

After watching the Det-Chi series, I don’t get this “Detroit depth” argument. Babcock essentially went with 3 forward lines and 4 defensemen in game 5. To me, that shows a real lack of confidence in Meech and the 2 AHL forwards he brought up. That leads me to believe Detroit’s depth is overrated.

Let’s not forget that Pittsburgh has depth. Sykora, Dupuis, Taffe, Minard, Goligoski, Lovejoy, Jeffery and even Godard, the majority of which have played with the team during the regular season. Ofcourse we have already seen Goligoski, Sykora and Dupuis in the playoffs. I just don’t understand how everyone keeps talking about Detroits depth when it is no better than Pittsburghs. If a scoring line player goes down, Sykora goes in. If a depth/penalty killer goes down, in goes Dupuis, Godard, Jeffery or Taffe. If a D man goes down we will probably dress another forward or Goligoski or Lovejoy. No matter how you look at it we look just as deep on paper as they do but they are currently already tapping into that depth. I would also take our healthy lineup against theirs anyday now. If our players play the way they can, Detroit hasn’t a prayer to win a 7 game series. A couple games maybe but not a series. Last year we played the defensive game and let them come at us, this year we will be attacking and they won’t know what hit them.

Anaheim used physicality to take the Red Wings off their game. That was the first time in a long time that I saw the Red Wings as a “mortal” team. With five minutes left in Game 7, the Wings looked like they were afraid of losing.
Now, two rounds later, the Red Wings are even more tired and more injured. If the Penguins can ratchet the physicality to the level of the Flyers series, this could be a quick Final. Detroit will come out confident, but I suspect that could be short-lived.
