30 Days of Mario: Day 3

The Washington Capitals stunned the Penguins in the first two games of the 1992 Patrick Division semi-finals.

Winning 3-1 and 6-2 on home ice, the Capitals had a stranglehold on the Penguins heading back into the Civic Arena for Game 3.

On April 23, 1992, Mario Lemieux put forth a fantastic effort to help the Penguins get their first victory of the season.

In honor of my 26th birthday, here is a pretty magical 6 point night for Mario. He truly makes it look routine.

The Capitals would win Game 4 before ultimately losing three straight, in true Capitals/Penguins fashion, to drop the series to the defending Stanley Cup Champion Penguins, but the series could have been over in 4 if Mario hadn’t brought the Civic Arena to life in a way only he could.

This is what separates good players from legends. The legacy of Le Magnifique is built off of moments like this.

Thank you for posting these clips. I’m having a fairly awful summer (I work in public higher ed in California – huge budget cuts), and getting another chance to see miraculous talent in action is a reminder of the joy of life.

    Happy B-day, Jesse!

BTW-Wasn’t that the series where Mario suggested the defensive scheme (1-2-1-1 or 1-2-2 delay) before with Game 5 that turned it in our favor?
