Earlier today we took a look at what I considered to be the 10 best logos in NHL history. Overall, the pattern showed that I am a fan of simplicity and tradition.
Not surprisingly, then, you will notice that the majority of the following logos, which I consider to be the 10 worst logos in NHL history, have too much detail and have too modern of a look.
Please feel free to generate a discussion within the comments section below ranking your favorite logos. I would love to hear what you think!
For a reference guide to each logo mentioned below, please visit Chris Creamer’s Sports Logos, where you will find each team’s logos and years (as I have posted them below).
Top 10 Worst NHL Logos Of All Time
10. Florida Panthers (1993-present) – As a graphic, this logo is not bad at all. In fact, it is spectacular. The detail is great, and aesthetically, it is appealing. But this is a sports logo we are talking about – one that should be able to be deciphered in full detail from a great distance. For that reason, this logo is my tenth least favorite.
9. Nashville Predators (1998-present) – There’s nothing like a saber tooth tiger that looks like its jaw is propped open. Maybe worse than that is the metallic, non-realistic coloring that is involved. It’s too modern, therefore I don’t like it.
8. Pittsburgh Penguins (1992-2000) – As with the other list, I couldn’t resist including the team to which this site is focused. If there was a modern logo that could be the poster child of the 1990s, this would be it. Exactly how or why anyone ever thought a pigeon-esque penguin was appealing is beyond me.
7. Ottawa Senators (2007-present) – I’m not a fan of the Senators. I never was a fan of their original logo. But most of all, I am a complete detractor of the newly-unveiled logo. I can’t explain why – other than for the sheer fact that it is ugly.
6. Buffalo Sabres (2006-present) – Is it a slug? Nope. How about Donald Trump’s toupee? Nope. A….sabre? Apparently, the answer is yes. The colors are great. The logo is pathetically bad. It’s too modern and, as a result, it looks to abstract and, well, hideous.
5. Atlanta Thrashers (2000-present) – What exactly is a thrasher? I’m not quite sure, and the logo doesn’t exactly help solve this dilemma either. I can see a beak, so I am assuming it is a bird, but honestly, I’m seeing more of a tornado-type image. Anytime I have a heard time determining what it is, I don’t like it.
4. Los Angeles Kings (2002-present) – There’s nothing like purple jewels to show off masculinity. In all honesty, I think the Burger King’s head would be a better logo than this pathetically dull crown. Heck, the old grey logo that read “Kings” was even better – and that, too, was pretty bad.
3. New York Islanders (1995-97) – Fluorescent blue, dark blue and orange. The color scheme alone is enough to put this logo on my bad list. But, if there was any doubt, the hooded, bearded islander put it over the top as my third least favorite logo. As with the Penguins pigeon, this is a pretty typical 1990s bad logo.
2. Vancouver Canucks (1980-97) – Ah, and the bad 90s logos continue. Sadly, even after being a hockey fan for nearly 20 years, I have just discovered what this logo actually is: an ice skate with the blade reading “Canucks.” Flashy colors, motion lines and ugliness are the perfect ways to describe this monstrosity.
1. Phoenix Coyotes (1996-2003) – And last, and certainly least, this ugly, edgy coyote. And when I say edgy, I don’t mean risqué. I mean edgy, as in not smooth, with many edges. If that wasn’t bad enough, the colors (brown, tan, green, maroon, purple and black) are ridiculous. I wonder if they could have found any other colors to sneak in there? Apparently not. Luckily we don’t have to look at this garbage any longer.

How could you leave off the Oakland / California Golden Seals original logo. Looked more like the Partrige Family logo than a seal.

Well, you’re not biased…I see the Penguins in there! lol

MJG, that certainly is a pathetically poor logo — one worthy of being on this list. And your comparison to the Partridge family was classic — great comparison!
Dabich, I’m definitely not biased. I’ll tell it like it is when it pertains to the Penguins or even their most heated rival, the Philadelphia Flyers.

I really like the logo analysis for both the NHL and AHL, however, I’m extremely disappointed that the NY Islanders logo didn’t take the top spot. That was horrible, and horribly embarassing for Isles fans. And that’s what made it so great. You’ve put down some excellent analysis and groundwork with this, you should now open this up to the masses with a poll.

TheDope, thanks for the comments and the idea — it will be put to use, for sure! As for the logos, we’ve determined they’re all bad, now we’re just haggling over the price. I’m not sure there’s much of a difference in being third from the worst and the worst, ya know? Hope to see you around more often, and thanks again for the comments and compliments!
