The Vancouver Sun is reporting that the Vancouver Canucks are pursuing often injured Swedish superstar Peter “Foppa” Forsberg. The Canucks have had a rash of injuries to their forwards, including a shoulder injury to Pavol Demitra, a shoulder injury to Alex Bolduc, an ankle injury to Michael Grabner, Steve Bernier fighting the flu, Jannik Hansen breaking a hand. The worst injury would be the foot injury suffered by Daniel Sedin.

Canuck general manager Mike Gillis stated, “First of all, he needs to find out if he can still play. If he can, we’re definitely interested. I’ve known his agent, Don Baizley, for a long time and I think we’d be on his short list if Peter decides he wants to play.”

Forsberg’s NHL numbers are second to very few. Foppa has 706 regular season NHL games, 249 goals, 636 assists, 885 points, +242 rating, and 686 PIM. In 151 NHL playoff games Forsberg amassed
64 goals, 107 assists, 171 points, +54 rating, and 163 PIM.

Peter Forsberg was once considered the best two-way forward in the NHL, using a combination of great play making skills, vision, and physical play. His two-way play has resulted in Forsberg never having a minus rating for an entire season over his career. However, this style of play has lead to several severe injuries. Over 13 NHL seasons, Forsberg missed one season entirely and played in less than 90% of 7 other seasons.

Forsberg has not played for MoDo, his Sweedish club team, this season. By doing so, Foppa will avoid the NHL waiver process if he should decide to sign with the Canucks or any other NHL team.

    Great piece.

To nitpick he did play with Modo but not after Oct 1st, thus avoiding having to go through waivers.

I’m curious to see you spell Modo with the capital D, just like fans in the area used to. Your last name sounds finnish to me though :)
