Bob Hartley has been fired as the head coach of the Atlanta Thrashers after his team failed to earn a victory in the first six games of the season.

The firing comes just months after Hartley led the Thrashers to their first ever playoff berth.

General manager Don Waddell will take over as head coach on an interim basis.

A press conference is scheduled for this afternoon to confirm the news.

Don Waddell is lucky that he is not the person getting the axe at this press conference. The way he mortgaged the future at last years trade deadline, all to get swept in the first round was laughable.

I don’t disagree with getting rid of Hartley, because I do think that he is overrated and is living off of his cup ring. However, I will say that I don’t like the mental makeup of the Thrashers. They lack leadership in a big way (in addition to a real first line center). Which falls on the GM’s shoulders, not Hartley’s.

I am very surprised that ownership is allowing Waddell to pick the next coach.

KG, excellent point. Waddell mortgaged the future for a first-round playoff exit. I scratched my head at the time, I scratched my head when they were eliminated, and I scratched my head when Tkachuk walked. And I’m scratching my head now, as Waddell still has his job.
