Swedes To Drop Out of Transfer Agreement

Bill Meltzer over at hockeybuzz.com says that Sweden will withdraw from the NHL-IIHF transfer agreement as of January 1. That certainly cannot be good news for the NHL, which already lacks an agreement with Russia. The lack of an agreement just makes it harder for NHL teams to draft and then bring over players from countries that are not part of the agreement. You are likely to see more and more players staying in Russia and Sweden, meaning a dwindling talent pool. Let’s just hope that they have better luck negotiating with the Swedes than they have had with the Russians. But I’m not betting on it.
One also has to wonder about the status of the Pens’ supposed trip to Sweden to start next season. I highly doubt the NHL would allow that to go forward if there is no transfer agreement in place.

That should certainly be the stance. But, knowing the NHL, I somehow doubt it will be the case. Bettman is all about the money, and if he can still get money from a country that is screwing him over, he doesn’t care. Pretty sad, huh?
