Finally some wingers!
Finally some wingers!
The Penguins added two free-agent wingers today and re-signed their starting goaltender. Marc-Andre Fleury was locked up for seven years. The deal is believed to be work $35 million. They also signed one year deals with two wingers, Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko. Satan will receive $3.5 million; Fedotenko will receive $2.5 million.
Upon reading of the resigning of Brooks Orpik, I began wondering what the blue line would look like next year. We have 8 NHL caliber defensemen and one on the fringe. Many would agree that Sydor is one of the defensemen who will be pushed off the game roster. Who else goes though?
The latest news on Marian Hossa, Jaromir Jagr and other Penguin-related players.
Could he be returning to where it all began?
The latest on Marian Hossa, Brooks Orpik and several role players.
One reporter out of Minnessota feels veteran forward Brian Rolston could have Pittsburgh on his short list of possible destinations once free agency begins tomorrow afternoon.
Free agency is over 14 hours away, and indications are that the first move by the Pittsburgh Penguins could be to sign Evgeni Malkin to a long-term contract. Also, Marian Hossa’s contract offer reportedly will not be sweetened by GM Ray Shero
Jarkko Ruutu tells the Post Gazette’s Dave Molinari that “Pittsburgh is a great team and, hopefully, we can work something out.”
While there is no word whether a contract has been offered to Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik, an ongoing dialogue apparently is taking place between the two parties.
Update: The PG is reporting Orpik has declined the initial offer.
The Tribune-Review is reporting Penguins GM Ray Shero is expected to make a contract offer to defenseman Brooks Orpik today.
Last October, I wrote a blog asking, Is the Bloom Off Ray Shero’s Rose?. Today, I answer emphatically, no, it is not.
Gary Roberts will return to the NHL next year, but it won’t be for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Click here for the story.
Many people are comparing the Penguins of today to the Tampa Bay Lightning of 2003-04, and coming to the conclusion that the Pens would be better off not following the Lightning model. While I agree that you don’t want to descend into oblivion like the Lightning did, I disagree with the reason most people cite for their fall from grace.
According to RDS and the Trib, Marian Hossa will test free agency.
Evgeni Malkin’s suggestion that he would be happy with Sidney Crosby-like money initially shocked his agent.
Apparently the rumored seven year, $50 million contract is not on the table.
Is it really possible to build a dynasty in the Salary Cap Era?
Yesterday’s news that Ryan Malone will test the free agent market appears to be a solid indication that his tenure as a Pittsburgh Penguin has come to an end.
It has been rumored recently that the Pittsburgh Penguins may trade their negotiating rights with Ryan Malone. However, Malone likely put an end to that rumor.
UPDATE: Malone explains his decision to the Columbus Dispatch.
UPDATE 2: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette also confirms that Malone will test the free agency market.
A quick look at the statistics counter the recent argument that superstar Evgeni Malkin disappeared when Sidney Crosby was in the lineup for the Penguins.
“It’s all up to Pittsburgh Penguins winger Marian Hossa now.”
Rob Rossi has confirmed an initial KDKA television report that the Penguins have placed Marian Hossa at the top of their priority list, plus Brooks Orpik supposedly is willing to take a pay cut in return for a long-term contract.
“The Pittsburgh Penguins have elected to file for salary arbitration with goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Ray Shero.”
Rumors continue to circulate that Ryan Malone has played his last game for the Penguins, as Aaron Portzline reports the Penguins have made an initial offer to the Blue Jackets to trade the power forward.
Marc-Andre Fleury suggests there likely won’t be any snags in his contract negotiations, while indications are that Marian Hossa will stay in Pittsburgh. Interestingly, though, Jordan Staal isn’t as happy with his role on the team as some might think.
Evgeni Malkin has been rumored to desire a contract exceeding team captain Sidney Crosby’s $8.7 Million/year deal. However, it appears Malkin may be easier to sign than has been reported.
There has plenty of talk going on regarding the situation with the potential unrestricted free agents in Pittsburgh, but this morning, things really seem to be heating up – and in a way not many thought might happen so soon.
arc-Andre Fleury’s playoff performance this season elevated his status from goalie of the future to goalie of the present, but his play in the Stanley Cup Finals was far from what many were expecting – despite an unbelievable performance in Game Five.
As if anyone put much stock into them, Penguins forward Max Talbot shot down the notion that coach Michel Therrien has created a rift between himself and his players.
With nearly a week separating us from the Stanley Cup, and just over three weeks until the start of free agency, July 1, it’s time to examine the Pittsburgh Penguins with an eye for what general manager Ray Shero should do.
For the first time, Marian Hossa has given us some indication of what may come during this off-season. Many have felt that Hossa would command top dollar and go to the highest bidder. However, Hossa explained that that was not necessarily the case.
I suspect Brooks Orpik has played his last game for the Pens. There are too many stories out there about his dislike of Mike Therrien, and he stands to get a huge payday. My guess is somebody is going to offer him more than Shero is willing to pay (a la Scott Hannan, Jay McKee, and we know how those turned out). So, operating on that assumption, what does Shero do?
That is the question running through the minds of certain Penguins after dropping the Stanley Cup. But who will answer “Yes” and who will answer “No”? Inside…
Last night, after the game, Mike Milbury suggested that the Penguins’ time was now, and that the future isn’t as bright as some suggest.
It was rather clear to anyone watching the Stanley Cup Finals that several players just didn’t seem right. As the hours and days pass, the real story behind the injuries will be unveiled.
What a season it has been!
Detroit won game 6, the series, and the Stanley Cup.
It’s a 2 game season for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
We all know the Penguins have gained many enemies in these Stanley Cup finals, but who is public enemy number one and why? The answer might surprise you…
